Question Will racegas make more power even without being tuned for it?

Sorry for the awkward wording of the title i just dont know how else to put it. Im in a heated argument with a friend of mine who says that if i put 116 in a car not tuned for 116 it will not make any more power at all. Is this true? Do i have to have a race gas map to see any benefits at all?

Depends on the temp outsifde but it will make more power if your car is currently knocking from regular 93 you have up there in NH.

Yes, it will not make more power if you put in leaded 116. In fact, you will probably LOSE power by running so rich due to the high octane leaded gas.

Now, that first answer was in a vaccuum assuming you don't raise the boost and that you aren't already operating in a manner that is causing knock due to running too much boost or running on the ragged edge of lean with a lot of timing. If you are losing power on pump gas due to these conditions, then some higher octane would provide an increase. If your pump gas tune and boost levels are all in good shape, though, then you'll lose power from going quite rich.

You can add race gas and turn up the boost to gaine 20-30whp without a retune, but that's most recommended with low octane unleaded fuel (100-104oct). I wouldn't be messing with 116oct unless I had a way to retune for it...

I sure it has to do with more than just the temperature outside. As far as i know the 93 up here is still better then the 91 people are forced to use elsewhere.

It's definitely leaded as I already mentioned.

After running my car in the heat of a CT summer, my cars used to ping quite a lot. But when conditions got better/cooler, no more knock. Higher octane would have helped. But Warr brings up good point about going with to high an octain and running rich.

Why do people assume that's true? Let's take a look at Sunoco's specs:

100 sp.gr. 0.764 (GT100 unleaded)
110 sp.gr. 0.725
112 sp.gr. 0.715
116 sp.gr. 0.700

Pump gas varies widely but is in the range 0.72 to 0.77. In this case the C16 definately has a lower specific gravity than pump gas. Since fuel injection is volume based a less dense fuel results in a leaner mixture.

Don't use octane booster.

Dave, I don't know those numbers, but it's common knowledge that you go immediately richer on leaded race gas. You don't go leaner, however you can obviously retune the car to a much leaner state than on pump gas.
