Perrin Intake Question

Hey everyone,

I just installed the Perrin Short Ram Intake and my EVO hasn't been running that smoothly since the install... Driving around town is fine, but when I am just crusing at 5mph through a parking lot and my foot is barely on the gas, the car lurches forward all of a sudden... It is worse when the AC is on..

Has anyone else experienced this? I know it says that ECU tuning is required on the Perrin site, but I really didn't want to do a reflash just yet..

Am I going to cause permanent damage?

Thanks.

Take it off and re-install the stock airbox until you are ready to get tuned. Make sure you reset your ecu by disconnecting the battery.

Has anyone NOT experienced it you mean...

If you knew that running the intake required a tune, and you knew you didn't want a flash yet, then why did you install it? It does absolutely nothing for you without a tune other than hurting performance. It baffles me when people do this, especially when they know beforehand that they shouldn't. Even after the tune, the intake won't do much besides make noise and suck in hot engine air. Your money would go a long way with other more useful mods. /rant

Holy rant batman.

By putting that intake on you have made a very unstable, and turbulent, MAF single that the ECU is trying to figure out. Not to mention that you are most likely running a lot leaner then you were previously. There is really no point in even getting an intake, to be honest. You are driving a turbo charged car that sucks air in as the turbo spins up. It only makes sense that you would use the factory air box as it flows the air plenty fine and puts the air in a flow that doesnt mess up the MAF. Which, in the long run, makes the car easier to tune. If anything, just put a drop in K&N air filter.

I definitely wouldnt waste my money on the intake. Its not the cars weak point, if it even has one (Paint job maybe?). You are definitely better off spending your money else where! Not to mention that the Perrin intake is probably one of the most problematic ones of all.

Warrtalon,

I didn't know it needed a flash until after I put in on and went to the Perrin site. I had Honda's before I bought my EVO and never had a problem with bolt-ons before... I guess the turbo makes a big difference. I am going to pull it off, the Perrin intake seems really cheap anyways, I am going to wait until I get the flash and go TBE and drop in filter.

Thanks for the feedback...

Yeah, that's what usually happens. We get a bunch of Honda owners who immediately throw on an intake, but it screws up the MAF (Hondas don't use a MAF do they?), so it's not a good mod.

TBE and flash will make you a happy, happy man.
