Yes, those hard-core Evo or STI fans who spend hours in their respective online forums might feel a nuance here and there,
is it me or do they like using that quote when they testdrive these cars?

Great googly moogly, what did I start? I just liked the forum reference. It seemed to fit - well, looks like it did :-)

Actually, I also liked the thing about betting against Lambos and Ferraris vs. these cars. Makes me feel proud ;-)

Last comment - if you read the whole thing, it's actually interesting to see how they also mention a lot of same things that you frequently see on these boards. Almost like they're reading the forum, or better yet, the people on this forum really do know what they're talking about. Well, some of us anyway. Certainly not me - I'm still learning...

P.S. It ain't no contest. 2.0L EVO matches (or just nudges past) a 2.5L STI --> EVO all the way baby! Worth every one of those extra 300,000 pennies :-)

A lot of their car comparisons come out with the winner being based on a subjective opinion. I drove both cars, and I would say the Evo is more "fun."

Oh well, at least the numbers show everything I care about.

Well that's the problem, it was "girls"...

Just got my Evo IX three days ago and guess what I traded in to get it. A 2004 WRX STI. Personally, I like the Evo better and here is why.

1. Interior - The leather seats in the IX's look way better and are more comfortable than the STI's blue seats. Not too mention that the STI's logo is pink.

2. Handeling - The STI handles really well, but the Evo just feels tighter. While driving the Evo it seems like there I have more control than I did in the STI.

3. Looks - The STI looks awsome, but I just love the way the Evo looks, It simply looks meaner.

4. Upgradability - The STI's boxer engine was annoying as hell to work on. If I had wanted to put new cams in it I think I would have had to taken the engine out. Plus the stock turbo on the STI can only support about 320whp. With just about 1500 dollars worth of mods on my Evo I can prolly squeeze out about 350 or 360 at the wheels. Not too mention when I put a full turbo back on my STI I was getting boost creep in forth gear over .15mPA . Then when I went to get the wastegate ported I was told it couldn't be done because my turbo manifold had been cracked. All this was too much hastle for me so I put the car back to stock and eventually just bought the Evo.

Not to say the STI isn't a sweet car cause it is. I really enjoyed having it.

We did test the same exact car as one of the other magazines but I'm not sure why we'd be faster other than having a better driver and/or track conditions. And we test them in stock, as delivered, condition. No icing the intake, no removing the air filters and no disconnecting of the 1st gear rpm-limiter, etc. We run them just like you would if you showed up to the track and decided to run them down the quarter-mile after performing a safety inspecition. We typically make five runs and move on to the next vehicle, so we have to be quick out of the box and in a wide variety of vehicles, not just one.

BWAHAHA!
my fav part from the article:

"The new, more feminine grille, even in its smaller-than-Tribeca scale, doesn't do the STI justice."

and "Most of us--although not the entire staff, it must be said--feel okay saving that much money for the added driving pleasure in an uglier car. "

NICE.

What did he mean by, "not the entire staff", I wonder who the hold-out was???

I can't figure out what there is to complain about. Like many others, I drove both the STI and the EVO in '04 when I bought my GSR. I just liked the EVO better in looks, and performance, even after being a long-time Subaru fan and going into it planning to buy the STI.

I went and took a hard look at the '06 STI the other day, and there is LOTS to like about it. I don't like the look of the new front end, but I think the rest of the car is good looking.

But back to my point....It is a good thing for us EVO guys to have the Subaru take the top block on the podium for once. That is what will motivate Mitsu to improve the EVO further, and we benefit as a result. This competition between the EVO and the STI is a great thing for fans of both cars. It reminds me of watching the Top Gear review of the Prodrive P2 car that isn't going to make it to production. Much of the platform for the P2 comes from the WRX/STI. So it is possible, if not likely that Subaru will adopt some if the technology from the P2 (particularly the awesome center diff) in a future model of the STI. I couldn't be happier with that. The envelope will continue to get pushed. The STI guys should be happy too. Not only to get a win from this particular review but also that the EVO has been such a stellar rival to push Subaru hard to make their car even better.

I love my EVO, and wouldn't trade it, but I'm trying to figure out how to justify to my wife that I need an STI too! I would absolutely love to have both.

Congrats to Subaru! you deserve it and let the competition continue
