If I Could Do It All Over Again......
If I Could Do It All Over Again......
Most of you will read this and probably shake your heads and make some jokes and who am I to say anything since I did it wrong the first time. Im making 500 wheel horsepower with all parts being AMS. Why complain right?
If I knew what I know now my modding would have been COMPLETELY different.
I would have started off with building the trans / t-case and clutch(shep racing of course)
Next would be the AMS 2.3 Stroker w/cams---you can't lose with a 2.3 stroker motor! Even if you keep the stock turbo, spool up is insane!
and then do all the usual bolt ons as such! I know those are the 2 most expensive mods other than a turbo kit but I wish I would have done them first!
That is what I would recommend anyone who is getting into modding their evo. The stock trans / t-case will hold a lot of power but still would be a great idea to get those upgraded!!!
Anyone actually agree with me?

I agree that the first mod should not be a big fat turbo. When building any car, you have to plan the complete package. Starting with the drivetrain is like building a solid foundation to support all future mods.
However, one could potentially get disheartened after spending $4k on supporting mods and still not being any faster.
The stock Evo tranny, transfer case, and clutch leaves a little to be desired. So if you want to build your car bulletproof, that is a good place to start.
by the way, what ems are you using?

Woah just what I'm looking for.. a guy with an AMS 50trim kit!
Do you have any pics or dyno sheets or anything? Sorry to hijack you're thread.. it's just I blew up my 20G and am looking around to get something a lil bigger.
I dunno what these guys are saying about lag.. the 50trim is supposed to spool up pretty damn fast.
It all depends on you're goals as to what you would do first. I've gotten very lucky on the transmission side of things... 50k miles (20 with an Exedy Twin) -- transfer case is fine but my 5th gear syncro is pretty much gone.

I agree I still have a stock 03 Evo for now but my first upgrades will be tranny + tcase TRE spec / shep of course, my clutch is already in. I figure build from the ground up to support new coming mods without worrying about other things having issues.. sure it wont get me any faster, but I dont mind. I doubt I goto the stroker kit since I want to see what kind of power the 2.0 can handle

I am very happy with my mods. TBE is the first mod that everyone does. K&N drop in is far better than an intake given the finicky nature of our stock intake design. A Fuel pump is good idea for safety and an Xede allows me to tune the AFR AND timing and Boost.
The result is close to 300 hp which just what the stock clutch can take.
The best part is all the parts are plug and play. I can take them off and go back to stock whenever I want.
