I never understood why people are told to baby new brakes.

If you read the break-in procedure on just about any brake site, it says something like the following:
1) Find an empty sideroad.
2) Speed up to 60.
3) Step on the brake with all your might until you stop.
4) repeat 3-4 times until the brakes are practically glowing
5) drive slowly home using the brakes as little as possible.

My understanding is 90% of warped brakes are a result of poor bed-in procedure.
