so when do the brakes start gripping??

I have 110 miles on it now, and the brakes are still weaksauce. I am being gentle on them, but even the crappy WRX brakes feel 5x as good as these new ones .

How many miles does it take for them to really grip?

I don't think it's so much a milage thing as a heat thing. Don't know how hard you've been driving it, but what you've got there is effective brand new pads and brand new rotors. They should be working rather well after some bedding in period which mainly involves gradually putting heat into the pads the rotors. Try searching for bedding rotors and pads and give it a try.

fyi, my STI came with those pink Sti pads. I actually took them out after about 200miles. They were rubbish compared to the evo's brakes... but i did have the project mu's in my evo...

The brakes are pretty good off the lot. After 500 miles they should be even more responsive.

On a daily basis, the brakes work better when they're warmed up.

well, I don't think the brakes are crap, I am just surprised at how long the bedding is taking. Maybe I have just been too gentle on them. I remember when I put Carbotech Bobcats on my WRX it took like 100 miles for the pad to transfer material to the rotor, and then they worked really good REALLY GOOD).

I figured straight up street pads would break in a little faster.

the one "panic stop" I had to do caused the brakes to STINK for like and hour...

I thought the same thing when I bought my IX. Manual says go easy on them for 300 miles which I did. Now at 900 miles they grip great. Probably around 400-500 miles I really noticed a difference.

i agree with the thread starter...i feel like my truck outbrakes my evo. it doesnt, i know, but i have to press so damn hard to get the desired effect. 7000 miles on my evo now and still not satisfactory to me.

stock everything... drove a few hundred miles...everyone said that they werent bedded. bedded the pads... still nothing... checked for uneven wear on each corner, all looks even.

i've just accepted it as the way it drives...never driven another evo so they all might feel that way to me.

I had my E8 rotors and pads replaced 500km ago and they feel the same when cold.
After some spirited driving they become a lot better.

Seems to me its one of those things where it's hard to get a good compromise between daily use and hard driving.

Car has 30 000 km
