. almost $1k below invoice in August 2003. In three hours I drove off their lot in a brand new EVO.

WAY to much effort.
i drove like 3-4 evo's before i bought my red one. i never had a problem getting a test drive.
although, i rolled into the dealerships with my mother in laws 02 S500 with amg sport package, and also wearing my pager/work clothes (which includes a tie or scrubs).. they seemed to let me drive whatever i wanted.
i drove a yellow 04, a white 05, a red 03, ended up buying the red 03 for $24,9 with 30 miles on it (never sold/registered, just sat for 2 years)

I'm having mine delived from South Coast (shipping company is picking it up tomorrow), and I've never driven or ridden in one. Closest I came was sitting in one at the Pittsburgh Auto Show back in February.
I'd done enough research over the last few years between the Evo and the STi that I knew what I was looking for in a car, so I'm not too worried about this.
Plus, as others have said, I'm getting it delivered with no miles (door-to-door delivery). I don't want some young kid test-driving the car I'm buying.

Granted I already own an Evo, but I went down to my local dealership when they got their very first IX in, a GG MR, and they let me take it out without a salesman with me.
All I really wanted to do was see how the 6 speed felt, so I drove it up to my house, checked it out for a little bit, and drove it back. Didn't get on it once. I love my dealership. Oh, and I'm 19 btw.

Geese1, I am doing the same thing very shortly. Buying a new IX from south coast or Long beach. I have yet to drive or even ride in an Evo. I have however test driven a 05 sti from my local dealership. I did like the car, however I am so used to the 4g63, (3 different eclipses) not to mention all the reviews of the evo being better than the sti. I am dead set on a new IX.
You have to flas the fact that you have money in their faces. Presentation is everything. If they see you pull up on a 95 neon asking to test drive an evo, w/ dirty jeans on and a wife beater, they would probably say no. (not saying you look anything like that haha). Ive sold cars and you tend to size people up. The younger they are, the less likely they are to be able to afford anything. It's sad but it's true. If you want to set up a test drive the best thing to do is call ahead and set it up. So that way they know that you are just stoping buy to destroy their 35K car (ix MR, etc)
Try this trick, which worked for me for testing driving an STI: Telling the saleperson that you have narrowed down to two car choices: STI or Evo. Then, you can proceed to shower him with specifions of two cars; what you read about pros and cons of both cars. Finally, mention that you have test drove the STI and like it lot, and want to test drive the Evo before making the final decision.

Im' assuming that you can only test drive them once you get the application started or something since alot of people would come to drive them just for fun or to say that they have driven one, i mean i was straight up and told them that i was looking to buy by the end of the year and i completely understand. But i couldn't imagine buying a car without test-driving it first.
Thanx,

Thanx,
I found an '03 on a used car lot. They threw me the keys and said let's go for a ride. Afterwards I said I'll call you and bought a new '05 a month later from a Mitsu dealer.
From what I hear, dealers are very tight on the amount mileage put on the cars.
I went to a dealer ready to buy an MR. I wanted to test drive it but they wanted to get the paperwork finalized first. I thought that was a bunch of crap and asked them how I was supposed to buy a car without knowing how it drives. I also inquired about the IX GSR, they said they had tons of them, but again...wanted to get the paperwork done first. Basically, it didn't matter that I wanted to buy the car...it mattered that I bought the car before I drove it. I don't know why they would call it a "test drive"...more like "buy then drive"
In retrospect..went to another deal. Brought me into the showroom had me sit in the IX MR...right away offered a test drive. At that point I had decided I wanted a IX GSR. So they took me out into the lot, checked my DL, pulled out the vehicle on off I went. Before that, they did explain not to drive it hard, and that I couldn't go far with it-to keep the mileage down.

The dealership I bought from let me drive two 03s when they first came out even gave me a free Fast and Furious DVD cause it was when they were doing all that movie crap. They really hadn't had any evos since then and when I was on this site and reignited the ole flame of wanting one lo and behold they had just got in a GG MR IX which I knew was the car for me. They immeadiately offered a test drive (the sales manager did he had remembered me from 03 and just recently I took my mom there to buy a car) I turned him down but when I made up my mind I did take it out before any paperwork was started just to see how I like the 6 speed just wanted to make sure it was right. Anyway it is just a crap shoot I can see both sides of the coin. By the way I remember of the many 03s they had they all had atleast 100 miles which turned me off. I bought this car like I bought the WRX with less then 10 miles on the odo.
