Evo9 Engine Pop!
Evo9 Engine Pop!
Greeting evo'one,
Here's the brief:
My evo is still new at 4200km on the odo (3,300 miles or so..) I've been breaking the engine in very slowly, boosting and spooling the more i go along..
I'm driving back home, normal driving (family in the car) and overtake a car on 6th, POP!!! the car suddenly loses all power and rpm's start to fade with no power at all.. I barely drive home with the car barely going over 1500rpm and black smoke like a locomotive..
I call the jap- turbo guys from the block and they rush to find out the clamp holding the hose into the inlet manifold is lose.. Tight it back in, the car still vibrates, check engine light comes on, try it for a run, POP! again!!!
So, tighten the hose back.. remove the battery clamp, reset the ecu, run it again, the car is smooth as silk..
I follow the guys for a spin, turbo-supra and evo6 by my side and we track some hard runs on the way.. the car is back to normal now.. all gears and all rpm's tested..
I'm still sceptical and dunno what really happened.. The guys said the ecu goes crazy if smthg like a hose pops out, and u got to reset ecu which they did..
Could there be another problem? I will check w dealer but u know guys, here these cars are with NO warrantee whatsoever..
Any comments and reflections appreciated..
Thanks,
Wael

Its nothing major. If you don't want that to happen again, get a set of t-bolts and it will never come off again. I've had that happen to me several times when I was bone stock, the clamp would blow off from the intake manifold, but now its on there like a champ!
disconnect the battery overnight , this will reset the ecu ,everything will be OK .
you can get t-bolts if this happens again , if its 4200Km then its time to stop breaking in the engine and beat the sh*t out of this car

Now that's sooooo reconforting to hear guys!!
Thanks a million, i thought something was wrong with the pressure regulators, valves whatever..
I'l still take it to the dealer though..

Since you had it come off, and the black smoke, you should also re-set the computer (and remove your CEL) by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery for 10 minutes, and reconnect it. should solve "that" problem. I agree with the T-bolt clamps!!
May I suggest that all EVO owners doble check the torque on the clamps connecting the IC pipes. When I was swapping mine out for t-bolts I noticed that the stocker were not even torqued to factory specs.
Even if you are not going to cwap the stockers out, get a torque wrench set it 53 inch lbs and torque those clamps.
