Intercooler Spray?

In my evo7 i had an intercooler sprayer.. which i didnt use much, but when in auto mode, it used to consume about 1 liter per day or so..

It just occured to me now it's not there anymore on the Evo9!! Is it that it has evolved and not necessary or it's just an option that is not available here...

Wondering..

It was likely left off because of :

1. lack of interest, a lot of guys thought that they were a bit ricey
2. Mits needed the space for the ACD stuff
3. Saved a little bit of production cost after they considered the above.

According to some old school turbo designers, a good sprayer can be worth around 10 HP.

EDIT: Sorry, I checked the book, that was around 5 to 10 percent of IC efficiency, which still might equal something in that range on a hot and dry day.

Maybe with CO2 spraying by I doubt warm water from the engine bay helped.....

Yeah, they didn't really go into that, but they were diffinitely talking about a water sprayer (Corky Bell's book on designing and building a turbo system),

.... but I was thinking the same thing in light of where the Water supply is on the Evo.

It would probably work alot better if the Windshield Wiper tank and the IC sprayer tank were reversed. Not sure how the pumps are set up though, I'd have to check that out.

Just for grins, I've thought about running a long wrapped line from the cabin and have it spray directly from ice water to see if I picked up any different readings on my Dynorad. I'd drench the IC pretty well and try to watch air intake temps, I think my Utec displays the appropriate sensor reading for that.

So when you are at the track or before a dyno run would you get out of the car and **** on the intercooler? Because thats basically how warm the water is. If the water isnt cooler than the ambient temperature Its not going to help at all.

Maximum Boost is a great book. I have read it cover to cover a few times.

This is the setup the STI\'s have. It might be a little better but I dont think it helps that much really.

I have the sprayer in my 9, but its a JDM model. So, don't know why you guys don't have it. I have my ACD reservoir in my trunk and the intercooler reservoir in the engine bay.

Then are you familar with that topic? ... if that was sarcasm ;-) it's possible that it was in one of my other books, I was reading a few at the time and may have gotten my ref wrong, but I'll check to be certain tonight, but in any event, the book isn't the only source that endorses the idea)

It's a commonly known mod in a lot of circles. Not saying it's the best, but if it's on there anyway, I might as well see if it works.

I agree that the engine compartment may not be the best place. The greater the temp difference between the IC and the liquid the better.

There is a thread that also mentions hummidity as a huge factor of effectiveness. Those of us living out in Dry Dry Colorado, know all about it with evaporative coolers in houses.

There is at least one good thread on this topic (it's all I had time to read during lunch :-)

The sprayer in my evo7 was working on auto mode, the reservoir was on the driver's side in front (yes the acd is in the back, same on the 9)..

I used to spray manually many times, but i never really felt a power surge or a boost increase or any of the sort..

Actually, I used it only to show off in parking lots and in instances when ppl are looking at your car's front!!

do you understand the difference between latent heat and sensible heat? Spraying warmer water than the ambient temperature on an intercooler will still have a positive impact on charge air temperatures if you get any evaporation (latent heat impact) at all.

Try this.... pee on finger and get it wet. Now, stick wet finger out the window driving 30 mph. Feel the cooling effect? That's the magic of latent heat.
