Unique, but common...

I just want to start this thread by saying "yes, i did search for my somewhat common problem on here" and I did find some information, but I still need some better advice. I was told my transfer case miht be going back becasue of a whistling noise the car makes.

Here are the specifics: I bought the car used at a dealership that didn't know everything about the car... turns out it has a very heavy clutch in it (which I didn't know before I went to get it). This is ood obviously, however Idk for sure if my transfer case is the issue, or something else.

The part that's odd about the car is the whissle is loudest under partial acceleration at low RPMs. I know it's not the turbo. As soon as the car starts boosting, the wisle doesn't go away, but it does seem a little more quiet for some reason. It's a fairly loud noise when partially accelerating. Known mods on the car are: Invidia 3" Titanium TBE, HKS intake, and Greddy RS BOV. I'm not sure what type of clutch is in the car, but it seems heavier than an ACT 2600. I'm guessing it's either 2600-2900 (assuming its ACT, I know it could be anything).

I spoke with a friend of mine who has built a couple of pretty fast Evo's, a $#^$%load of fast DSM's, and drives a low 10sec 1st gen. He said the EVO is naturally noisey as hell when a heavy clutch is put in it, and that it is probably normal. He did say the rear end felt a little lose, but the T/C did't sound too bad when we drove around a parking lot. I'm planning on doing a BG Synchroshift fluid change this week in the tranny/tc. Also, doing oil and rear diff. Hope to find no shavings.

ANY IDEAS???? Thanks.

One thing I would do to start would be to contact the previous owner, if possible. Maybe he/she could clue you in to any potential problems.

You wrote a lot, but you didn't really explain the noise in detail. Please explain that part and that part only.

Make sure you use DiaQueen LSD OIL GL-5 in the t-case and rear diff.

Btw, there is no ACT 2600 - just the 2900 and 3100, although ACT doesn't call them by those names.

Many people recommend only using the OEM diaqueen gear oil for the T-case. BG is good for the tranny.

Maybe I'm totally wrong here, but doesn't the T/C take 1 quart of fluid, and the tranny takes 3, but don't they somehow share the fluids? If this is the case, how come you would use Diaqueen in one, and something else in the other? sorry if I'm an idiot here...

Also, the noise I'm talking about it a really high pitch wissle when at low RPM's. When you clutch the car and put it in nuetral it just sounds like normal AWD noises, mayeb a little bit of noise, but nothing of concern i dont think... more like buzzing-wissle. However, the low-rpm/slow partial throttle wissle that im taling about is really loud. (Almost like the turbo when not accelerating hard, but it is a lot closer to you...i.e.-not the turbo).

Also... I was unaware there was no ACT 2600 for the Evo, and I'm aware that there s a eal name for them, i was just too lazy to look em up on ACT site, wasnt too important. But good info.

No, they are completely separate devices. Tranny takes GL-4; t-case takes GL-5.

I'm going to take your word on this b/c I know you know what you're talking about. As a matter of fact I already felt stupid when I said this to someone... they told me that I was wrong and they share the fluids.

So is Diaqueen my best bet then for sure? Or could I use BG ultra-Guard or something else GL-5 for t/c?

If you search around, you'll see our discussions on fluids.

Absolutely use ONLY the Mitsu DiaQueen LSD GL-5 Oil. Only use BG in the tranny if you really must, but the diffs get DiaQueen.

The tranny takes 3, the TC only takes 0.6 and they are NOT shared fluids. I'm going to be trying the Mobil 1 stuff pretty soon in mine. Anyone have any input on this fluid?

Diaqueen (Can only be bought at the dealer) or Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof are the only fluids that should go into the transfercase.

could be an aftermarket flywheel. They are known for making some gear lashing noise. It would be while at idle and the sound would decrease when the clutch or when a load is present.
