Massive Brake Dust?

I just got my new Apex Silver Evo yesterday and after only putting 50 miles on it both side up to the windows and all four rims are just covered in brake dust. I don't mean just a little bit but the whole side of the car looked like I drove through black mud. Has anybody else experienced this and for how long does it last. Are the pads from the factory just cheap and need to be replaced asap or will they stop? Also on a side note I was washing my back rim and noticed it had been curbed. I called the dealership and left a message for my sales person. I hope they replace the rim. I was in a hurry when I took delivery and didn't look close enough, but I hope they are honest enough to take care of me.

Performance pads are dusty, it doesn't mean they are cheap. You can get low dust or high performance, they are for the most part mutually exclusive. The closer you get to "race" pads the more dust you get, and conversly as you move closer to "street" pads the less dust they produce.

Bummer deal on the curbed rim - going to be tough to convince the dealer it was that way at delivery. They should have done a PDI with you and if it's not noted there I expect your in for a fight.

Dusty pads are good. Brembo pads are NOT cheap. Lots of dust means the pad material is soft and good for stopping. If you were in stop and go traffic then this is where the dust came from.

Luckily the evo has only 6 spokes to clean

I am having the same problem, the only difference, I have managed to put 450 miles in two days . I think it shows more in the silver color. The whole side of the car is covered in dust.

I agree with the others, soft is better!!

I think I may have one bullet in my gun for the dealer. I took the paper work home for my wife to sign, and I haven't brought it back yet, so if they don't replace the rim, they can have the car back. I think it's fair because they should have noticed it before they sold me the car. Other wise I have to say I love the car. It's a blast to drive and I am sooo glad I didn't wait until the STI came out. I very highly doubt anyone will be able to pull an 13.1 quarter out of a stock STI.

Mine is silver and I never notice it all over the side. The rims get a lot of brake dust after a week or so of driving. Nothing more than I'd expect to see.

You might want to take a look at EBC Greenstuff pads. I have them on my BMW and they REALLY cut down on the dust and I they seem to work as well as or better than my stock pads.

You should probable bed the pads before doing any serious braking. If you don't you will get massive dust and extremely high wear. Bedding is quite simple - Heat the brakes up (a series of 85 - 35 mph slow-downs should suffice) then park the car (no parking brake!).

Actually, there is one other fator with race or performance pads. As you know both the rotor and the pad wears down when the brakes are depressed. Softer brake material usually works better at lower temperature for the pads. harder material usually operates ideally at a higher teperature range, and means that there will be less pad wear in most cases at the expense of more rotor wear, and in some cases horrible squeeking and squeeling. I recently installed performance pads on an AUDI TT, and they were the stage 2 APR units. Under normal driving conditions, they squeek terribly, but they do have additives that make brake dust a thing of the past. Also, the brake feel is much better, and much more controlled. I would say wait a while before you make a decision, let someone else spend the money to have squeeling brakes before you fall into the same trap.

try ceramic... it has a lighter dust so you do not see it enough. also try bedding the pads. you can find instructions on the brembo site

That's funny, mine are actually getting worse (dustier) with time.

mine seems to be getting better, at least the sides arent covered with it as often anymore..

after trying tons of wheel cleaners, i just discovered Meguiars wheel cleaner.. its the only one that actually sprays on and hoses off. every other one you gotta wipe like crazy... very little wiping needed with this one.

1st 1,000 miles I had a lot of brake dust. I now have driven my EVO over 6,000 miles and barely notice it.
