Thanks for the pics. So it is not advisable to run springs on the stock MR bilsteins? Also, I know this topic has been beat to death, but which transmission it better and can handle more abuse...the 5spd or 6spd.

Anyone ever race these two models head to head bone stock? On a side note, I only plan to do some bolt ons like a turbo back, lower intercooler pipe, boost controller, bov and a reflash. Everything else will remain.

My driving is comprised or 50% "around town" and the other 50% on the highway. Im used to the high rpms on the highway, because my car now is a 5spd. Though it does get annoying sometimes...

thanks!

Evo IX w/ NO SSL
Work Wheels
Coilovers
JDM IX rear bumper

Option 2:
Evo IX MR

I was thinking, the MR does have a 6spd and a few other things like the generator, aluminum roof, hids etc. I was going to change out the wheels and suspension anyway but I would have to wait at least a year or so to get the money.

If I get a base IX I can do all the stuff I want to in option 1. I think of it as the base IX is kinda similar (no options) but mainly without a 6spd.

Is it worth getting the MR for the sole benefit of getting the 6spd. I can live without the vortex generator and aluminum roof.

btw, am I able to get the hids put in easily. If I were to buy a set of oem hids from the Evo IX's with the SSL package etc and just stick them in my headlights. Is it "plug and play"?

TIA!
I don't think the 6 speed is going to be worth the extra cost to you. The bilsteins and wheels make up a good chunk of the price difference on the MR. If you're going to ditch them anyway, why bother? The vortex generator runs.. $200ish painted if you really wanted one. I'd go for the IX GSR if I were you.

You can run springs in an MR that are made for the MR. There are a few companies out there that sell them. Works and Swift are two. GSR lowering springs are a no-no on the bilsteins.

What is your definition of transmission abuse? If you mean what I think, then the transfer case is the same on both and it usually dies first on an abused trans.

Wow, very similar decisions for me......but I'm coming from a 04 evo, so all parts transfer over

I decided to go with a regular IX and with the $5,000 I didn't spend on the MR I purchased

1. Stance Coilovers......................................... .....$1,500
2. Transfered Volk wheels(free).....would cost.....$2500
3. Sold stock IX wheels and tires for..................-$1,000
4. Will get HID's, w/install.....................................$500
5. 17x9 wheels w/race compound.......................$1,400
6. WIll buy JDM rear bumper for...........................$700

all cost me about $5k, only difference between you and me is that I will autocross and road race.

But if you don't want to mod and race, I would get an MR and just put lowering springs for astetics. good luck

by abuse, I mean slipping the clutch when drag racing (not dumping it). Rev matching on the twisties, shifting fast and hard (not speed shifting), nothing to drastic.

Can you name a few more springs that work well with the bilsteins on the MR?

I really do not want to void the warranty until I graduate college. I have 2 semesters left so I wont be doing the "go fast" mods for at least a year because I dont graduate until next spring. I am planning to buy the IX in August and sell the M3 before winter hits.

I was reading earlier that a fellow member bent his work s1's (black w/polish lip). This is discouraging because they are my favorite wheels. too bad the ssr sp1's are not forged (they are cast).

I was searching and couldnt find many places that sold the work s1 5 spokes, can anyone help out?

You should be fine with that kind of usage with either transmission. I've never read of a six speed failure. I'd like to see if someone has though.

I only remember those two companies for the MR springs. There is one more that slipped my mind.

For what it's worth, it should only cost you 4k more for an MR.

You should go for the MR, Its worth it, you dont need to modd a base IX to change it into a MR, becuase you'll be paying the same price either way, it may be a little bit cheaper to convert, but only a few bucks cheaper, plus you'll need the 6th gear for long drives, start it right!
