Ouch! Talk about a lowball offer

I've become increasingly more serious about trading my 8 for a 9. Yesterday I decided to throw some feelers out to some dealerships.

05 GG MR with 13K miles. Bone stock with only a clear bra and catch can. Pristine interior and exterior.

Their offer was $23,000 to trade in. I realize trade-ins are usually lower, but this was laughable. Not only that, but after they took my keys to appraise it they didn't lock the doors and some douchebag customer got in my car and started fooling around. I really hope I don't have to go to the West Coast for a deal, but if this was an indication as to what to expect I better look into travel arrangements...or keep my VIII

Selling to a private party almost always insures you more money. Dealers need to make a profit on selling there cars.

Yeah but that is ridiculious, I only found very few evos under $23k and they were normally non MRs with 45k+ miles on them.

Oh and let me add, they were never above 2003.

You've gotta also bear in mind that for a dealer to sell the outdated model of a car is extremely difficult. I've already been through this. Mines an 05 TB VIII with just over 12000 miles on it(80% of those are highway miles but they dont care about that) and about 17,000 in mods. Now even if they were to buy it from me they'd only give me about 24-25000. Garbage.

23 seems right for a DEALER, since they will turn around and sell it for 27 or so. but chances are you could get 26+ private party.... just my .02

Keep in mind that a dealer will NEVER give you back money that you paid into mods. if you are putting them on the car and thinking that you will get that back out of the car, you're crazy.
nada average dealer trade in is 25600. you won't find a dealer that will pay more than that for trade in, and the money you spend in mods is gone.

customers at car lots never want to pay retail for a car but always want retail for their trade. if you want to get retail for your car take the time and effort to sell it outright. pay for advertisment of the vehicle and such also. trading a vehicle in is the easy way out and a dealer wants the chance to make a margin off your trade since the customer doesnt want you to make any margin on the new vehicle.

always a debatable subject

dealer will make more $$$ on your trade vs. selling you a new car. go private sale.

23k is definetly too low for that car, medina mitsubishi in ohio gave me 21.5 for my 03 for a trde in toward my BR350IX#005. i had 23k miles on it with about 4k in mods. was in mint condition and i thought that was low,you should try and sell it on your own, you should get at least 27k. good luck
