Evo and safety. Why can't I find info???

I'm having a really hard trouble finding information crash test ratings for the Evo. I looked up the lancer ratings, and the side-front occupant ratings were brutal... 2/5

Everything else looked pretty good, but I assume that since the Evo is a more structurally rigid car, the crash ratings should be better. Does anyone have any information? I know they aren't dangerous cars, but does anyone have any specific numbers or data for me? My parents aren't cool with me about to purchase a car that has a (apparently) terrible crash rating.

Help me out!

still no responses? Does this mean the Evo really is as unsafe as these numbers make it look???

Has anyone been hit from the side near the front of the car?

Please give me some input...

first of all this site seems a little bit biased ("Mitsubishisucks.com")

and I know the rating is 2 in the front, I just need to know if anyone can elaborate on this rating for me. This is pretty damn low, and while I am very confident in my driving ability, I am not confident in the driving ability of some idiot who might very well try to kill me or my passenger from the side.

I would really like a bit more insight into this. Has anyone gone the STi route due to it being safer? I just need a bit of reassurance that's all...

My only accident has been having someone lose control and slam right into my door. It scares me a bit to think that had I been driving an Evo I might not be here right now...

Let me educate you here. Every write up is biased to some approach because its someones personal perceptions on things.

Second of all, if its your time to go then no safety rating in the world can help you.

Now yes it may improve your chances of living slightly but everyday you get on the road you could die. You really are putting your life in the other peoples hands around you.

Well I was asking for data in the first place.

Now I am asking what the real difference between a 2 and maybe a 4 or 5 is. Is it a huge difference, or is it just slightly better. I'm not even worrying about myself. What about my girl, or someone in my family. They are in the car too so I think it is my job to worry about their safety as well.

If the safety ratings are your main concern this is not the car for you. You first posted that you needed to convince your parents about the safety rating then you later go on by saying that you need the safety rating because you are worried about the occupants in the car. Get a WRX wagon. It has a 4 star driver and 5 star passenger crashing rating and also a 4 out of 5 star rating for rollover.

Evos / Lancers share the same basic chasis. Yes there may be more welds, but side impact results should be the same IMHO. If you are really concerned install a 6 pt cage with Nascar style door beams ....

Side impact ratings on the Lancer/Evo are low compared to a WRX because of no Side Airbags period...

Well then if you are so concerned with their safety I would advise you to never leave the house and child proof everything around it.

The point I am getting at is you cant control everything around you. Which would then make your 100% safety proof vehicle mean squat when a big rig falls asleep and decides to collide head on with you.

I think alot of peopel have this false ideology that a car is safe. No car is safe at all! I DONT CARE IF ITS A VOLKSWAGEN. If you are on the road you can die period.

The number 1 killer in america is vehicle related accidents. This is more than heart and lung desease, more than gun accidents, more than aids or other STD's, and all other illnesses.

If you are that concerned about your loved ones safety I would just take their licenses away and do all your traveling via foot. I know it sounds crazy but thats the truth.

with a car like this your gonna be speeding more than ur accord...so instead of cruising at 40 or 50 in ur accord youll be at 70 or 80+ so ur screwed either way lol.....

for a car to get certified in the u.s. it has to be safe.... thats all i have to say about that

All vehicle crash test ratings can be found on the NHTSA website: http://www.safercar.gov/Index2.cfm

The Lancer Evolution has a 2 star side impact safety rating listed for front passengers, 4 star for side impact, but no other crash test ratings listed for the Evo for some reason. A regular Lancer is also rated only 2 star for front side impact. But it is 4 stars for frontal impact. An Evo might get a different rating due to the different front end, but should be pretty close to that.

For comparision sake, a Honda S2000 has a 5 star side impact rating for (front) passengers, and a 4 star rating for frontal impact

I got rearended at about 50 mph a couple weeks ago. Pushed my car under the rear of the car in front of me, which hit the car in front of it. The car that hit me was a 1980 Malibu. I walked away with some bruises and torn ligaments. I was surprised by how well the car held up. I plan to replace the car with a new IX.
