Air filter question
Air filter question
Sorry if I've reposted this in another thread (still getting used to the site)
Does anyone have any information about the true agins from air intakes? I guess I'm more interested from a tuner's perspective.....
In Australia, MRT is a local tuning company based in Sydney and they do alot of work on WRXs here (and are quite reputable). According to their R&D into the EVO 9 with an ECUTEK, they seem to think that quite a few aftermarket air filters dont give that much gains - they say that the perceived gain in power is really a leaning out of the air/fuel ratio and once you've corrected it with the ECU the gains almost all dissapear.... they've also had experience with aftermarket filters generating internal vortexes etc so that the stock air sensor doesnt give accurate readings further limiting the ECU's ability to produce gains....
The only thing is that they dont mention what brands of air filter they tried....

Any comments?

the stock intake box on these cars is very good can handle up to the area of 400whp...no need to change it...if you insist on an intake you would probably want to look at Buschurs set up...not that expensive but affective
thanks for the info guys....
looks like the forums are divided - aftermarket vs stock....
I guess in theory a well designed aftermarket would be better than stock but from what I've read from mrt once you calibrate the air/fuel ratios to 'engine preserving levels', the gains dissappear..... I guess that's why I was interested in a tuner's perspective.....
I'll look into what the Japanese think about intakes (going to Japan in June)....

Get the car first before you start to think about modifing it. The EVO makes more torque at 2,000 RPM than the Honda makes at peak.
Bottom line. Unless you are making some serious power, do not mess with the Intake.

Dont know the torque figures for the EVO IX @ 2000RPM but remember that gearing is a torque multiplier and kW/hp is the indicatior of work done so comparing torque figures alone at certain RPM is like comparing apples and oranges.
As for intake modding - I personally like to look into things deeper myself (just my character). It's nice hearing opinions from other forum members as well as tuners and magazine articles. I'll keep u guys updated about anything I find out from the Japanese tuners/magazines.
