Same here...I was thinking this is normal. Because the other 2 evolutions I test drove was the same way,,,but that doesn't mean anything either.

If someone could chime in, that'd be great. Because when one person says "whine" , it may mean something totally different to another.

I have 70k on my evo. My first tcase was replaced around 37k. I had and still have a small whine at 60mph~. Car pulls great. Indication that my first tcase was going out had a much louder distinctive whine from low mph to high. When you are at high speeds, that tcase should be singing pretty loudly if it is going out. Also, you should be hearing a louder sound while slowing down too. Another way to check your tcase is to pull out the drain plug. Check to see if there are metalllic pieces in the oil, or stuck to the plug. If you have shavings, then you probably have problems. It might be worth your time to drain the tcase and check it.

FYI- you should be changing out your differential fluid every 15k. if not sooner based on your own wear and tear.

when at speeds of 65-85 i would describe my sound (dont believe its the tc) as a faint whistle but only happens when i slightly press on the gas (still in vaccum on the gauge but not in boost). this only happens in 5th gear. i think i will put my stock intake on and see if it fixes the whistle sound, unless someone here can let me know what it is.

i'm still rockin' my whinning tcase. i've put 1000 miles on my evo since it started whinning.

so when it does eventually go out...what should i expect? like does it lock all 4 tires while im driving?

so far the whining is noticable only at slow speeds (10-25mhp). i don't notice it at higher speed but maybe that's because everything else about the car is loud. the whine isn't too loud either, only if all windows are shut and the radio off would you hear it. it's almost like when the window of your house is cracked open on a windy day. the first time i changed my tc fluids, i did notice some fine metal pieces but i have heard that it's normal in a new car. the second time i changed it there were none (metal pieces) so i guess it's ok. maybe i'm just paranoid.....i do freak out when i hear something i'm not used to hearing.

I had one I worked on witht he wrong fluid it it, It made that same sound after 500miles. It was the bearings going out. Only really makes the sound at like 5% throttle, not enough speed to accel and not to little to decel. And happend at like 55and up. I am waiting to get my hands on another TC case, I plan to send the gears out to a few ring and pinion manufactures. I can find like 15 diffrent ring and pinion sets for a mustang all costing under 300bucks. The $2200 rebuild crap is just crazy. There just has to be a better way. I just hate it for the guy whos saving for a turbo kit and then his tc takes a poop and his out $2200, its its getting to be like a normall wear and tear thing with all these bad tc posts poping up.

The sound your hearing is normal, most evos or the ones i have driven have this sound in first and some of second gear. but yeah at about 25mph the sound goes away.

So basically the district rep made me put the stock clutch back in before he would honor the repair.

My mods at the time were TBE, MBC, intake, flash, ACT.

They replaced the TC, rebuilt tranny and new synchros.

It's pretty much what I said up top. You are under 60k, your car is basically stock minus an ACT, your TC will be fixed under warrenty. The guys at service desk will probably give you a hard time. You need to explain to them that the ACT clutch has nothing to do with the failing TC. And also under the Magnuson-Moss Act they will need to them PROVE that the ACT caused the problem, which they wont because they are lazy.

Then if the service guys don't do anything for you, request to speak with the district rep in the area, or set up a time were he can come out to look at your car.
If you still have your ACT in at the time he looks at your car, he will probably tell you to return to stock clutch before he honors any labor/parts.

So I basically went on evom and bought a 3500k used stock clutch for $150 and then I got all my labor/parts under warrenty.

I had my tcase changed out at 34k and I had a twin disk HSK clutch at the time.
I had to **** and moan and fight, but I got it done. It helps if you had a lot of service work done at Mitsubishi. Also, if you have not changed the fluid any time recently, I would change it before you took it in for warranty if you havent done so recently. Dont let them see old fluid, they could use that against you as well. As mentioned before, they may have to contact the district rep.
