Talked to original owner. He lied!!

Finally, I tracked down the original owner of my Evo. Mitsu had already told me that the clutch was replaced at 10k and the turbo at 11k under warranty. I bought the car with 12k on it from a dealer, and found out I didn't have stock boost lines. So a MBC was definately on there at one point. I'm also suspected to have 272's. Rough idle and vacuum at 14. You can also tell guages were installed on the A-pillar. So, he answers the phone and I'm excited to ask if I have a flash or tune. That's all I needed to know! Yet, he goes on to tell me that he NEVER modded the car and NEVER had a problem with it!! I told him about the repairs under warranty, and he denied them. That pissed me off. Why would he do that? Did he think I was a Mitsu rep. or something? Anyways, now I have to figure out what cams I have exactly and if I have a flash or not. I want a EcuTek or XFlash. What kind of trouble might I run into?

Get a custom tune, not a mail-in flash. That way your car will be tuned for _whatever_ is currently in it.

On second thought ... [edit]what he said vvv[/edit]

you can use ecuflash software to check if your ecu image is different from a stock 03 image. check out the ECUFlash forum here on evom for more info on the software.

Seems kind of odd he would lie to you about something he didn't even sell you. What's his motivation for that?

Something smells fishy.

Maybe he wasn't lying to you....it's conceivable that there was a bait & switch - someone(between the time the orig owner sold/traded the car & you bought it) associated with the dealership used your vin# to charge repairs for another vehicle. For example, the dlrship mechanic is doing sidework and needed a new turbo & your car's vin was the "warranty donor". And maybe your car also donated an unmolested A-pillar & who knows what else.....but then again, I'm a conspiracy theorist

I frankly dont' understand why people freak out if an Evo has or has had basic mods done to it. Lots of much more plebian cars are modded and/or returned to stock before they are sold and I for one take comfort in the fact that at least the Evo was designed and built to stand up to such "abuse' unlike more everyday automobiles.

Why?? To possibly save me hundreds of dollars getting a custom tune, that's why. Make sense now? Why would you tell someone to f*** off if a simple "yes or no" could really help someone out? That's ridiculous. How did I "track him down"? I actually found his first oil change receipt in a Khumo tire brochure in my glovebox. So I called him once, big deal. Evo owners are a community, I thought he would help. I think he lied because he had the car modded, and put it back to stock to get the parts replaced under warranty, then traded it in. He must be really scared of . He even said he couldn't remember where he traded it in. I'm going to look into that software that can detect my stock ECU or not. But, if I get a custom tune, will I ever be able to find out for sure what size cams I have without actually looking? BTW, my car runs great.

It would just bother me to have the next owner of one of my cars calling me up. Its happened several times and each time its annoying. Hell the Stealership called me when I traded in my last car. They told me the car was throwing Cam sensor CEL's and it never did for the 30k miles I had it. I told them to go eff themselves then too, they probably beat the crap out of it.

I would think if you bought it from someone you know, or from a friend, or even through someone it would be a little different, but from a dealer... come on...

Just to let you know, I left a message on his answering machine. He had the option to call me back, and he did. If someone called me about my old SVT Focus and it's aftermarket sunroof problems, I would tell them where it was installed b/c it has a lifetime warranty. It's not my problem, no, but I would still help out. That's behind me now, the dilemma is what is the cheapest way to detect if I have a tune and what it's tuned for possibly?
