Feelings on ACD
Feelings on ACD
Most cars I am looking at are 03's (though I have (99.9%) decided what car I will be bying in the next few weeks) and do not have the actiive denter differential? Or whatever it is called. Questions remains...on a highly modified car (talking stroker with gt35r) does it really matter enough the spend an extra 4k to buy a later model car that does have the acd.
Who is it really geared towards (type of driving)?
What are its benefits?
How will it effect hard traction pulls (acd vs non)?

is a mechanical type of the same active diff almost as good...? Doesnt have the computer but at least it isnt awd... equal power to all wheels at all time.... the sti is crazy adjustable when it comes to the differential... too bad its ugly and I would never buy one but wouldnt mind having their diff

Do you mean 03?

Perhaps he's talking about a Galant VR 4
well, i know for one thing, there has been less reported failures on the ACD equipped cars. it's probrobly due mor to the LSD than the ACD, so i would say you'd want the ACD transfer case unless you plan on throwing an LSD in the other. the open diffs are a little weaker.

If your into road racing/rallying/autocross, the ACD provides better stability when cornering, especially on less than ideal surfaces (rain, snow, gravel). The car essentially drives itself.
stock vs. stock, the ACD transfer cases are stronger. put a quaife diff in an 03-04 transfer case, and it's a different story. but that is a pricey mod some people don't want to get involved with. also, the 05+ have LSD's in all diffs which equates to better cornering and straight line traction.

i read in SCC a few months ago about a challenge where their stock 05 MR beat all of their modded project cars around a slightly wet track using the "rain" mode of ACD. oh, one of their project cars was a modded STi. they referred to the ACD button as the "whoop *** on all SCC project cars in the rain" button.
I keep the ACD on the tarmac setting. In that mode I know how the car will behave. I spun the Evo pretty nicely in the gravel setting, not because it made it more unstable, but I just wasn't familiar with how the car would handle in that mode. Overall nice concept but not really useful imho.
