Questions for the military guys
What do you guys do for storing your car when getting deployed? I might be going away for 6 months, and was thinking of putting my car in a storage unit and have a friend (who cannot drive stick) start up the car once a month....would this work?
I would leave the keys with someone that you trust completely. Make sure they can drive stick because just starting it isn't good enough, you need to have it driven for at least two miles once a month otherwise your tires will develop flat spots. Plus it will keep everything lube up. I leave my car with my mom when I deploy, they guys that have theirs put in storage always have problems with tires, belts dry rotting and so forth.
Buy a nice car cover from someone like Noah and store it in someones garage. Long term parking sucks. Plus you want some one to drive it around man.... keep them tires moving and fresh....get an E-6 or E-7 would be my first route.

im keeping my friends STI while he is in iraq now. when i do deploy i usually put my car on stands, cover it and put some stabalizer in the tank. find someone you totally trust to keep the car for you.

this is how i store my car but remove the wheels it puts extra stress on the suspension, my old car was stored like that with the battery disconected, 9 months later fired right up

i always find someone to watch it with strict instructions that death will come to those who mess it... instructions to start it up once a week or so, take a for a spin around the block driving it with ease, not drag racing it... i also take down my mileage before i leave and make sure they know i did. you may trust them, but the urge to do something stupid always happens. i usually leave it with a girl also that i can trust.

The times that I've deployed, I've been lucky enough to be able to drop it off with the old-folks and have them store it in the backyard...with the car cover over it. Had em start it and drive it lightly once a month or so.
I've known of people tha rented a climate controlled, storage room and driven the car gently inside. IF you go that route, make sure only ONE person you really trust knows it's there, and have them drive it once a month or so (lightly).
You're looking at mad COLA, tax-free money, and hazardous-duty pay, so start planning on the upgrades for your return

Yeah big things are
1. disconnect battery even if someone is going to drive it once in a while, it only takes 1 min to hook the ground back up and will save you from buying a new battery
2. Unless someone is going to drive it take tires off
3. make sure its covered
4. dont park it on grass as the moisture will create rust
5. be sure however your leaving it with knows what they are doing
6. If its not going to be moved drain the fluids cause they causes rust in the coolant system and oils and gas go bad
