Belching flames durring a shift.

I was passing two cars recently while in 3rd gear. As I passed the 2nd vehicle, I noticed that he started to try to catch up to me, so I nailed it to 7k and grabbed 4th gear, I stayed in it a little further to distance myself and cruised on down the road( a very remote area w/ hardly any traffic). As I pulled into a gas station a few miles later, the car I passed pulls in and asked what I had under the hood. He said that when I shifted, I blew out whitish/blue flames and accelerated very rapidly away. He was thoroughly impressed to say the least.
My question is this. What caused my car to belch forth flames? I always figured that this is an indication of running too rich as excess fuel is burning as it exit’s the exhaust. Am I correct?

Running tad rich and more than likely a nonexistent cat-converter. Do you have a test pipe installed?
