I pulled apart the roof lights (and sunglasses holder) looking for a place to hardwire the V1 and couldn't find any switched power leads.

People with a sunroof may have switched power up there, but on my non-sunroof I couldn't find anything.

There are a lot of wires under the dash especially on the left hand side by the hood release. I'm going to start poking around there with a voltimeter and see if I can't locate one.

Anyone else get this done already? Anyone wiring in a turbo timer or etc that found switched power?

I was going to hard wire my Passport, but i decided it would be a hassle plugging and unplugging the power cord because the windshiled if just about far enough away to make it a big P.I.T.A.

Anyway, not to change the subject, but it seems that the biggest problem would be where to put that bigass V1.... I had one of those but I sent it back because it was so big, it was sooo obvious and also it drove me crazy with continual warnings of false alarms. I got the Escort Passport 8500, it got better reviews than the V1, it costs about $100 less and it's a little less obvious.

Still, what I'd love to see is some kind of stealth pod or mount that would go on the dashboard and look like its part of the car. The Radar Detector would be hidden there and perhaps some gauges could be mounted there too. I think a well designed and good looking product like that woulkd sell like hot cakes...

As for the switched power, did anyone look in the fuse box under the dash in the left side? There should be some available spare terminals there.....

why don't you just run a seperate power wire from the battery and put a switch on it and put the switch next to the dimmer control.

Any wires found under that dash? Near the hood release?

Need RADAR detection!

You can ground to anywhere on the chassis - that's the easy part. What you need to find is a power line (+12V, which is pretty much every live wire in the car) that is on with the ignition.

You didn't mention if you have a sunroof, but I think jedinite's idea is best if you have one. There's bound to be an igition-switched power lead you can tap off of in there.

If not, you can definitely get a switched power lead from the stereo harness and probably a thousand other places under the dash, but those you gotta look harder for.

That would defeat the benefit of the hardwired install if you ask me. The point is to have it in and on whenever you're driving without having to think about it. So the goal is to hook it up to a switched power source, that is switched on by the ignition.

You can use an empty slot in your fuse box and buy a fuse/splce kit that splices into your wire that you run to your V1. i'm sure there is somewhere under the front dash where you can run your ground with existing wiring

The V1 is the best detector on the market and has been since its inception. It has won every test except those sponsored by Escort. It "Falses" because it is picking up signals that EVERY other radar detector doesn't. I used to hate my buddy's V1, until I owned one and was able to appreciate the technology. There is nothing like it on the market. Bogey counters and directional indicators make it in a class of it own. (Boy, I am starting to sound like a spokesperson .

I wired my V1 to the ACC coming off the radio. It can also be wired to the cigarette lighter harness.

As far as location, the V1 can go anywhere any other detector can go since it is the same overall size of other detectors. I plan on putting mine in the third brake light as my fellow BMW enthusiasts have done in the past. My buddy makes a custom mirror out that houses the remote display of the V1 for a completely stealth install. Click here for pictures of the mirror. Click here for info on the brake light install.

I will be performing the third brake light install in the near future and will document the install when complete.

umm maybe im wrong but couldnt you wire it using the ground and power wires in your stereo harness? you should also have a remote if the V1 has this option. the remote is what you would use for an amplifier and your car's stereo uses it. it triggers the power on when the car starts. this way your detector is not on all the time.

Those are good tips for the wiring of the V1, but I disagree with your statement about how good it is. I've read several independent reviews of detectors and the V1 is outscored in real usefulness and real word effectiveness by several (much less expensive) units by different manufacturers. The Passport I got trounced the V1 in every respect except the X band distance (which is not used by police hardly at all and at any rate all the detectors pick it up so well that the V1 is pure overkill and useless as are all the bogey and rear facing detectors. I just got back from a trip to Miami and back and the Passport detected "every" radar in use by the police, the lasers they use in the toll booths and the ocassional X band worth paying attention
to (like the 2 radar activated speed indicators they've set up on I-75 North bound). Also, watch out for all the glowing reports and tests organized by a certain well know magazine. The guy who writes up all the praise and sets up all the tests in also an employee of Valentine....... Let the buyer beware...

For some unbiased opinions on radar detectors take a look at http://www.radartest.com/ They are unbiased because they take no money or advertising or anything from any manufacturer..... read their reviews and read about them.......
