Debating which to purchase...RX-7?

I know this is EvoM so there will be some bias. But I also know that many of us have great respect for these cars....

Here's my quandary. I've got my LY 03 Evo sold and I want to buy a 2006 IX in Tarmac Black.

Thing is I've also had thoughts of buying a C5 Corvette Z06, TT Supra, and the Mazdaspeed6.

Problem with the vette is I'd need a beater for the winter. Problem with the Supra is similar. And as for the Mazda, It's a great car. I test drove it and have seen what it can do from someone else's. It's very underrated.

I know a few vette guys including my coworker with a yellow C6. They are great cars (duh) with great potential. Finding a used C5 Targa top or Z06 for my price range would be easy. I saw plenty already. I don't want to have to buy a beater tho. And i also found an excellent condition Supra with low miles HERE but I can't justify spending 35k on a decade or more old car. I know it's a supra but the Evo IX is gonna be even more rare in the future with great potential as well...so that's out.

The thing about all that is that I'm madly in love with the evo and I want this one to be my first new car. Fine so after a little confusion I'm back to my original plan. 06 Evo.

Until today. I found ThIS. This car is old...but it's also in practically brand spankin new condition. This car also has immense potential and is extremely light.

Now I don't care about the ZOMG ITS AN RX7 shi*t....IMO RX7, Supra, Evo, STi are all on par with each other. We just aren't as WOWed by the latter 2 cars cuz we have them or they are available to us.

What It's coming down to for me is reliability. I plan on modding whichever i go for...RX-7 or EvoIX....but I know that the RX7 is prone to reliabilty issues. The main reason being burning or leakin oil. Which is remedied by watching the oil situation more carefully and taking care of the engine from what I hear.

What I want to know from anyone on here that may have knowledge of the car is...Is there anything else that is a common problem on the car? Is it true that Vette engines fit in the RX7 very well with minimal work? That would make that insanely light car a monster.... What is required to get more power out of the car? What do parts cost?

Im doing more research. But i figured there would be people here with useful info.

I am leaning towards the evo myself because it has similar potential, i know it very well, and it would be my first new car.....id baby the carp outta it.

you'd need a beater for the winter just the same as with the vette and the supra.

the main problem with the rx7's is heat dissipation. It causes a host of problems, but if you address the issue early and maintain a high level of awareness of the common maintenance issues, you can have a great car.

The LS1-LS6 swap in the RX7's is getting more and more common. The weakpoint appears to be the rear end in that situation. It's a lot of torque to ask a stock rear diff to put up with.

You'd better not buy an rx7 with 5k original miles and put a ls1 in it.

Buy the damn IX already.

As for putting an ls1 or ls6 in the rx7 check out hinsonsupercars.net they are the best at it, and do it all the time. I was about to put an ls1 into a 95 240sx, i love 240's and have owned 4 of them, but my cl is getting a little older, and i want to buy a new car. LS1 will go in the car easy, but its kinda costy. Mounts, radiator, driveshaft, header, wiring, plus around 4k for a used ls1 with trans and ecu. I would budget around 10k minimal plus the cost of the car to do it right, and you will probably want to mod it more down the road. The car would be sick, dont get me wrong, and i still plan to have another 240sx in my life, i love s14's so much. But right now in my life i want an evo, and maybe down the road when i have some money i will make a drag car out of a s14, and keep the evo for the street. I also highly considered a c5. My buddy has a 01 z06, and i love the car. Its fast, tons of looks from women, but its also a 5 year old car. Things are going to start going wrong. On a second note, have you ever seen the price of vette parts aka the vette tax, or the labor required. the labor to do anything is rediculous. I would do most my self, but to do the clutch you have to pull rear suspension, rear end, exhuast, drive shaft thing(vettes dont have driveshafts its somethign else) then the trans ect. ITs so much work to mod a vette, and i would want to im just sticking with an evo. And hell if i get a 9, i think about 1k worth of mods, and i will atleast beat his z06 in the 1/4. Maybe not on the highway, but out of the whole evo will own.

All stock RX-7s inject motor oil into the combustion chamber for seal lubrication; it's designed to work that way. You'll see about a quart of oil used every 1000 miles because of this. As far as leaking, I've never heard of RX-7s being that bad.

The 3rd-gen RX-7 is a money pit. They run extremely hot stock, which is murder on components under the hood. Unless your pockets are deep, I wolud get the Evo.

the car is a 1993 with 91k miles on body and the motor is street ported by petit racing with approx 35-45k miles on it.. body paint is actaully good for being a 93' in sunny south florida... the car was bought from a previous owner who had to get rid of it and was supposed to be sold to my cousin... he no longer wants the car so we are passing on a good deal.. here's sum pics

Single turbo conversion helps out greatly with the heat dissapation. The nice thing about rx7's is that even when they break down they still are drivable but with ALOT less power. I love rx7's and would get one in a heart beat. I would not buy one as a daily driver and my only car.
