That's why I typically pump 2-3 gallons into the trash can first.

Take your example (although, I've never seen any gas hose anywhere near 2" think. Gas station hoses are normally like 1/2" - 3/4"):

V=Pi*r^2*l= 3.14*(.375"^2)*72"= ~31cuIn

226cuIn * 0.00433 gal/CuIn. = .138 gal in a hose that is 3/4" in diameter and 6' long.

Not only is that dumb, wasteful, and environmentally damaging, it's incredibly DANGEROUS too. What if the guy at the pump next to you flicks his cigarette butt in there?

I'm sure he is joking, but if he isn't, I have always heard that a cigarette will not light gasoline. I may very well be wrong, but I have heard that in the past. Also, thanks for figuring out the quantity based on those given specs.

Wouldn't it get pumped back into the underground reservoirs, after you put the nozzle back?

Guys. Seriously. Do the math. It's an extremely small volume of fuel left in the hose. At MOST it's 1/6 to 1/4 gal. Look at the formula for volume in my previous post.

Stop perpetuating ridiculous urban myths. And for goodness sake do NOT dispense gasoline on to the ground or into garbage cans!!

Your right, I did a little more research and found that it can light the vapors. I did see a few spots that said it will not typically light a bucket of gas if thrown directly into it, however I would not personally try that either. And I certainly do not condone shooting gas into the trashcan, especially with the price these days.
