Replace stock Advans
Replace stock Advans
Long story short, found a nail in the left front tire of the car while at the dealership, the mechanic took me to the garage and showed me the spot, it's really close to the shoulder of the tire and he said it's pointless to seal from inside 'cause I'll risk having the seal broken everytime I make a right turn and replace the tire is the way to go. I have about 12k on the car and he said the other right front tire has probably another 12k in it, so I just need to replace that left one. Anyhow the dealership quoted me $329 to replace that one tire, with labor, balancing and tax included, they'll have to order the tire and would take about 2 days. I haven't checked other places yet as I just got back to work, I told them not to order it yet while I'll check the price on my own, but I don't want to drive on a leaking tire for too long as it's losing about 2 psi per day. So is $329 for this a good price or a rip off?
Tirerack has it for $252 plus shipping. Since $329 quote includes tax and labor, it's fair price. Shop charge around $10 per wheel for mount and balance at least in WA state.
I heard that having uneven treaded tires (replacing one new tire) on AWD was not the best thing to do.

Matching one new tire with three old ones would not be good for your diffs since the new tire will have a larger diameter.
If I were you I would replace all 4 and try to sell the 3 remaining ones. Or try to plug it and see how long it lasts.

are you all retarded?, you have 12k miles on your car you cant just simply replace the tire, the tread depths are totally different.. unless you wanna **** your drivetrain I say go for it 330$ is nothing. =p,
I suggest getting all new tires.

You would do better with TWO new tires and keep them on the same axle. 12K miles is good wear for stock advan.
If I were you I would get 2 stock sized all-seasons like Toyo T1-S.
And of course get 2 more as the other 2 advans will need replacing soon :}

I would not put two different sets of tires on an Evo. The center diff will work overtime to compensate the differences in tire rotations.
Just plug it and hope it lasts long.

Thank you all for the inputs.
I was only at the dealership because when I was there a month ago for service they found a nail in that same tire, it was in the center so they sealed it from inside, now a month later the same tire is leaking again and I thought it might be from the same spot, but to my luck it turned out to be a second nail. I guess I pamper my car a lot, never launched or driven in an auto event (althought I have been to a few), it is my daily ride but mostly it's driven on 55mph streets. I'll take some pictures of the tires when I get home and post them.
Would it still effect the drivetrain if I replaced both front tires with stock Advans? That was acutally my first thought, the mechanic was actually the one telling me to only replace that one after feeling the treads on the right front tire and made that "another 12K" comment. I never owned an AWD car before and I'd always replace two tires on the same axle for a situation like this, is that not a good idea for AWD?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but one should never "plug" a radial tire, for a nail puncture like this they'll have to taken off the rim and sealed from inside.

I have had a several radial tires plugged before and it lasted pretty long. It seemed to work for me, someone correct me if I am wrong.
If the puncture is in the side plugging it is not recommended.

replace all 4 or patch/plug the one (if possible). do not replace just one. www.tirerack.com has plenty of options that would be a lot cheaper than going the dealer route for replacing the set and you can decide if you'd rather get more performance or more comfort (which it sounds like you'd lean towards).
