Pop between shifts = flame?
It might be cool but if you keep on doing it your going to ware out the bareing in your turbo. Plus its not all that healthy for your car. Good luck replacing your piston rings after a while.
my friends WRX used to do this (upgraded turbo, FMIC, TBE, U/LICP, complete fuel system, Ecutek)
We wondered what it was untill one day we were driving at night next to a tanker truck, he heard the turbo load up and he blipped the gas and the reflection on the truck turned bright orange.
Was quite cool lol

My car used to pop on stock exhaust. It has absolutley nothing to do with your rings. Way to pull some sh*t out of your a*s there.

lol
If the after burn ignites off the turbine (like anti-lag systems in WRC cars, although the anti-lag system is more violent than a regular afterburn) then it is extreamly bad for the turbo. WRC car owners don't care cause they can afford new turbos whenever they want. turbine temperatures can rise as much as 400 degress C during an afterburn. also too much unburnt fuel running through your engine IS bad for your piston rings. its called ring wash when your running too rich and can really cause some serious problems with your engine. also the explosion in the exhaust manifold puts tremendous stress on that metal which will cause the manifold to crack within a short amount of time.
go get a tune.
