Yep, it can be done. Search around though, on of the members (cant remember who), took his cat apart and put a test pipe (or use 3" pipe from the auto store) though it - he did a little write up on it. from the outside it looked just like a normal cat.
My friend did it this way in my driveway: took the handle off my kids scooter, and "pounded out" the inside of the cat. it is now hollow, and mission accomplished. done in 20 minutes. (he took the cat off the car, and took turns pounding on each side. Another friend used a "masonary" drill bit.
Gutting the cat out doesn't produce as much HP as just running a test pipe, it may actually rob power on some cars. Reason is the exhaust gasses will expand to fill the empty cat chamber only to then have to bottle neck back down to exit the cat...

I just took a length of Rebar and a heavy mallet and flailed on it. Also, another free mod which as a Buick guy you probably did was eliminating or rerouting the throttle body coolant lines.
Buschur gets 2 shells and welds them together no leaks and looks like a cat, there is a bigger void but I doubt they would make anything that doesnt make same power as a test pipe.
test pipe or gutted cat = same thing.
