May 2003 EVO magazine: Evo VIII vs Cayenne Turbo

In Round Two of EVO magazine's review of the Cayenne Turbo, the Porsche is pitted against the Evo VIII at Bedford Autodrome (this must be is in Great Britain somewhere).
I know... we know the Evo will win, but they just wanted to see how close the Cayenne is. While it's amazing the Evo can beat much more expensive cars around the course, it's more amazing that the Cayenne Turbo matches the lap time of a BMW M3!
An interesting tidbit: the Evo VIII and Cayenne Turbo have nearly identical Power-to-weight ratios. The Cayenne has 192 bhp/ton vs 193 bhp/ton for the Evo (UK version).

The fastest lap times achieved:

1.16.65 Radical SP3
1.22.85 Evo VIII
1.23.30 Porsche 911
1.24.55 Ferrari 575
1.26.85 BMW M3
1.26.85 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
1.30.95 Peugeot 106 GTI

Why do they even compare 2 very different automobiles from completely different class?

They reviewed the Cayenne Turbo against the Audi RS6 on a country road, against the Evo VIII on the track, and against the Overfinch Range Rover off-road. It's to see how well the Porsche does at all those things. It's insane that they even did comparisons like these. It's not something you would normally see from an American magazine, which is one reason why I like to read British car mags.

if it may please the court, the porsche and m3 had identical lap times. the cayenne turbo is a beast, thats why they included it in the comparison. and it certainly proved worthy

British car mags are very cool except they frustrate the hell out of me. For years I have been reading about Evos, WRXs, Skylines, Cosworth Escourts, Elises etc. Reading about these excellent automobiles and not being able to buy them became annoying for me!! (most still can't really be had in the US)

Why can't someone do a Euro VIII VS a US VIII test. That is what I want to see. Pretty impressive lap times baby

Mechanically, I believe Euro Lan Evo 8 is 99% similar to JDM Lan Evo 8 (with Super AYC and ACD)... If so, any comparison made to the slightly stripped USDM 8 is wasted gas don't you think?

No you forgot about one more important other addition. A 6 speed tranny. Really helps mid range power.
