EGT temps w/sensor located at turbo outlet???

Is my EGT gage or sensor bad? Searching hasnt helped me . I just installed it (sensor) in the turbo outlet & my temp gets to about 350f deg. max. boosting or not boosting. What kind of temps are you other people getting with the EGT sensor located in turbo outlet & also in the downpipe? Does your temps vary when boosting / crusing?

Thanks

Any chance your temp prob is touching the turbo outlet... Not on EVO but on my STI, I inserted temp prob too much that I was reading pretty consistant high EGTs..

I dont think the probe is touching the outlet anywhere. Im kinda thinking my temps are on the low side. After cruising a while the drop to about 200f deg. Is my gage or sensor bad?

350F is way too cold. Something is wrong with your setup. It's better to have the temp. probe prior to the turbo instead of after. You should be reading over 1000F at cruise after the turbo, with WOT about 200F higher.

Couple things....

350 is way to cold, something IS wrong

Why not put the egt probe up by runner number 1 or 2 ?

I placed my probe in the heatshield above the exhaust manifold (did not have the time to place it the runner yet) and I peak at 600 F outsite of the manifold!

Some reasons why you would not want to place the probe in the runner:

- Some people say it is safer after the turbo. If the probe decides to break or something, you will not get chunks flying into the turbo thus damaging it. Sounds good in theory, but I never heard of this actually happening to anyone.

- As I found out personally, if you are using a cheap EGT (such as Autometer), the temps in the runner peak at the max of the sensor and gauge when tuned correctly. That is, the gaugue & probe max out at 1600 (if I recall correctly) but a good tune will have your car peak around 1500. So, if you have a problem of running too hot, the gauge would not be able to tell you which makes the gauge kinda usless. If you have a good gauge & probe that max out at 2100F (such as Greddy), then putting in the runner is the most accurate place for it.

I thought it was reading to low, I guess I will have to try a new sensor/gage... I dont want to have to worry about the probe breaking down & going through the turbo. That is why I chose the turbo outlet.

Thanks for the help everyone!!

EGT probes are designed to go in the exhaust...... Your chances of getting struck by lightning are probably greater than your chances of breaking an EGT probe and having it go through the turbine wheel.

Recheck the wiring. Make sure the wires from the probe are not backwards as they meet the wiring to the gauge. Flip'em around and see what happens.

Maybe recheck the ground too.
