This always happens on any car. It is because the compressor causes more resistance when the clutch is engaged.

It has to be more than just 5hp loss, you can't feel 5 HP, but with the A/C on, the car is deffinitely not as quick, which would make it more than 5 HP since I can feel it.

The problem is on a dyno at WOT, the ECU turns the AC off, so you don't really measure the effects of the AC on power. I know in Texas, when I nail it, the air gets hot real quick coming out of the vents, but just driving around town, it doesn't cut off. I would guess that the cutoff is set to throttle precentage or load, but I do not know for sure.

Manufactures (espescially with performance cars, but becoming quite frequent with regular passenger cars now) cut the AC with the ECU to give you back the power at WOT so that you can have the power to pass/race whatever you do on the streets. So as far as throttle percentage it happens around 75%+ of throttle.

I'll have to confirm this on the way home, i'll try WOT with the A/C on and see how it feels. Can anyone else confirm that the EVO has this feature built into the ECU?

Cant personally confirm it on the Evos and hate to sound like a student, but i am. Im an auto tech student and my AC text book says that its a very common feature on most newer cars. If you test it out let us know. I may have to do it too. I might have been added on newer Evos and not on 03's etc. Anyways... Keep us posted.

there might be some element in this. when go for long, fast drives, it always seems to be real warm even though I have the AC switched on. I'm not overheating or anything, just driving fast for extended periods (30mins+). I'll look out for it...

What is it like driving your evo on those crazy roads out there? I visted my Grandma who lives in Bangkok and my Uncle was going to let me drive his Honda.....no way in hell. I am not that agressive to even compete with the traffic like that.

^it's an ability you kindda develop over years of practice. every time i spend an appreciable amount of time abroad (US or in Europe) I get back and for the first 15 minutes in the car it even amazes me how people drive here.

I work 1.5hours out of town so I drive out in the morning and in in the evening so it's not too traumatic.. but yeah, it's a pita driving the evo around in Bangkok...

my previous car was a DC5 with exedy metallic clutch. now THAT'S and pain in the butt to drive in traffic for any length of time...

Average of 5 AWHP which you could say was 7.1 BHP if you assume a 30% drivetrain loss/dyno error. So 7hp?!?!
That post is ONLY bypassing the pulley when the AC is NOT engaged. I'm sure previous 25HP #'s are more correct.
