A/c power

How many of you guys seem to lose repsonse or power when the A/C is on? Has anyone came up with a fix besides turning it off...I tried searching but I didn't get very far. My wife loves the A/c but i love the power HAHA

Happens on every car.

No way around it other than turning off the A/C.

The answer to your question is everyone, whether they notice it or not. A/C is pully driven off the crank and uses a clutch that engages when turned on to drive the a/c compressor. So when you turn it on, you're not only attaching more mass to the drivetrain you're adding the extra work done by the compressor.

Oh, I haven't confirmed this on the EVO, but 2g Eclipses and Talons had logic to disengage the a/c clutch above a certain rpm so as not to damage the a/c system. I found at stock power levels it reacted well enough but not once I modified the car to where it would rise in the rpms faster than the disengagement would like, allowing the a/c compressor to spin up pretty high. After destroying my a/c compressor's pulley from this once I've since always made a habit to check if my A/C is on before spirited driving.

you could perhaps set the thermostat at a slightly higher temp. That way, the compressor 'duty cycle' is less and so there's less of an effect. recirculating the air can also help if it's hot outside. not really helpful if someone farts though.

what you can do also is actually tint your windows (if it's legal). there's some film that doesn't darken significantly but reduce the amount the car is heated through the windows. woks to a small extent. at the end of the day, you want the interior of your car at comfy temp (22-24degC?) but right in front of it there's an engine and a turbo that's at least 90-100degC average so it's a losing battle.

if your a/c is taking lots of power, it might be a good idea to have it checked out. if you're low on refrigerant or whatever, it can sap a lot of power without actually doing much cooling.

He lives in FL, so his A/C is gonna suck a lot of power most of the time. It's f-in hot there. >_<

There is a device that shuts off the ac automatically at wot, but what it's called, where it is, I dunno.

The A/C takes sucks up about 25 hp. At low rpm and off boost the engine is making less than 100 hp. So, no solution other than to shut the A/C off.

I wonder how accurate that 25 hp # is. I have wondered about that and if the ECU cuts the AC at WOT like other cars (Subi).

I just can't imagine a pump taking 25 hp to spin. My lawn mower has 6.5 hp and I can chop up a basket ball with out stalling it out... I would imagine it would turn an AC pump. Don't ask about the basketball. My grass was very long...

Its actually very accurate. Most cars lose around 20 to 25 hp with the AC on. Its a parasitic loss because like mentioned above the AC is driven off the crank pulley. All though the pulley on the AC compressor is always spinning when the car is on. Its only when you turn on the AC that the clutch engages and the power loss starts.

Yep, I try and leave the AC off, definetely feel the power loss when it's on. Now......25hp, that seems a bit much, maybe like 5...

OK, Here are some dyno #'s

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...highlight=belt

Average of 5 AWHP which you could say was 7.1 BHP if you assume a 30% drivetrain loss/dyno error. So 7hp?!?!
