race gas
Here's my take on it for what its worth even though I'm not a tuner, but I think if you saw gains just by dumping some race gas into your pump gas tune, I would think that you were knocking a bit and had some timing pulled when you were on pump gas and the race gas prevented that in which you saw the gains.
^^I think you are on the right track... except that you would be running just below the knock threshold on pump. when you dump race gas in, that knock threshold raises. therefore, the ecu advances timing to run, once again, just below the new knock threshold.
thats my understanding anyway...

Adding Race gas does not net more power. So for anyone thinking it will, just save your money because it wont.
The only way RAce gas will help performance is if you are TUned for it. Race gas is good for cars that run higher boost. It's safer for detonation and the ECu wont pull timming. So in that way YEs you can see more power with Race gas. But if you just throw Race gas on a stock tuned Evo you wont see notice a difference.
