Free IX muffler modification
Free IX muffler modification
Not sure if this has been covered yet, but I'll do it anyway.
After reading the free modification you can do to the flap in your muffler (EVO 8) and realizing the IX does not have this flap...I decided I wouldn't let the effort go to waste.
So what you can do is open up the perforated pipe some more, so that more gas goes into the main muffler chamber, rather than get routed around the muffler first.
This is what your muffler looks like.

Inside are a bunch of perforations in the exhaust pipe.
What you can do is take a long flathead and mallet, and sort of play "connect the dots with the perforations)
The idea is to connect enough perforations so that you can bend the "flap" that you created and allow more air to pass through.

In that picture you can see that I cut away enough perforations to make a flap. I then took that flap and attempted to push it downwards allowing more air to pass by.
I'ts difficult to take pics in there. Hopefully you'll get the picture.
Remember to shake the shavings out of the exhaust before re-install.
Performance gain?
Things like this are measured in theory, not butt dyno's. Could I feel any difference? No. Is there a difference? Maybe, I dunno. But it's free.

1. They leak cause they never fully shut and seal correctly.
2. It is really really loud and it sounds like someone is throwing up and screaming at the same time.
If I ever wanted to do something like that, I have a 3" vacuum/boost activated cutout. In vacuum, the valve is actually "sucked" closed so it seals better.
i have the rear section on my stock IX off. for it being a "free mod" i think its awesome. Gives it a nice aggressive sound, and we all know that the shortest exhaust on a Turbo car is the best so why not shorten it up that 1.5 feet and a severe bend and then through a muffler.
waaayyy quiter then a just a aftermarket catback, and 10x quiter then a TBE w/ or w/o a cat

but you have to keep in mind that the exhaust gases are not really leaving the vehicle quite like they should.. They are being trapped under the car and if the windows are down they can be sucked inside the car while driving. But anyways..
