Tire wear at 1200 miles!
Where do we go to get new tires?? When are tire places going to be carrying our tires? Also if you watched Motor Trend TV tonight on Speedvision, "Guss the Garage Guy" or something was talking about tires and when to replace them. He said specifically that AWD and all time 4 wheel drive vehicles MUST have all 4 tires replaced when it comes time to replace tires, not 1 not 2 not 3 tires but all four must be replaced at exactly the same time. If not there could be damage done to the clutch to mention one of many things that may go wrong with the car. Has anyone else heard of such a thing? I'm gonna listen to him because I want this car to last me a long time once I finally get it. I'm going to baby this thing to death.
Info
Just a little FYI.
1. How worn your tires appear is highly dependent on your driving style. Any tire with a 300 and under rating can be worn out quite easily with an aggressive driving style. Some of the ultra performance tires available today perform better than a lot of the full race tires I ran five years ago.
2. Waxing your calipers is useless. The melting point of automotive grade wax is quite low. The brake force generated by the quite capable brakes of the EVO will create enough heat to melt it away quickly. Also if you are going to wax your rims I would recommend something specifically formulated for rims. Like wheel wax. You can get it at tire rack and it’s heat resistant. Works quite well and lasts a lot longer than regular wax.
3. As for Guss the garage guy. Most of today’s advanced all wheel drive systems can compensate or live with small deviations in rolling diameter. Depending on the manufacture usually around 2 to 3 %. Larger deviations may be possible but I wouldn’t recommend. They should under almost all circumstances be replaced in pairs. I am not saying you could get away with running your old almost slick tires with a pair of new ones, but if you had one pair with five thousand miles and the other pair was new, it would not harm the system. All depends on thread depth and type of all wheel drive system. I have driven and tracked all wheel drive cars for the past eleven years and have done this many times. Remember we are talking tenths of an inch.
Just thought I would share some of the information I collected over the years.

I have 5000 miles on my Evo already! Those 5000 miles include 200 miles of road course driving. My tires still have about 70% of their tread left. Granted the edges are a little more rounded over than they were when new....huhu
But I drive pretty conservatively....because I'm in traffic about 80% of the time I'm behind the wheel of my Evo.
I'm pretty sure these tires will last me through the summer easily....and will be ready to replace at about the time when I need to get tires that will work in cold weather temps.

At 2500 miles I have rotated them once already. Rubbed the shoulders off the fronts after 2 autocross days, and one practice day (20 plus runs, it was a blast). Should make it to maybe 7K miles at the current wear rate, unless I get some race tires for autocrossing (likely).

Baby it to death? What a terrible waste. Why own it if you will never push it hard enough to realize the true performance benefits that it offers?
Might as well just own a picture. If you are not prepared to push the performance envelope, might as well leave it in the garage. On the street, you automatically become the target for all manner of performance junkies out to prove their superior performance. Don't make the rest of us look bad!
