Airbox scoop damage

Today my car hit 20k and I'm **** about maintenance so I changed the air filter. But when I removed the top of the airbox it seems that the scoop to bring cool air into the airbox scraped up my car badly.

Is this something I should go to mitsu about? What could they do about it, and how could they fix it?

It sucks because after about 60k or so miles I was planning on going with an intake and now there will be a huge ugly metal spot showing and soon maybe some rust. What I'm mostly worried about it is it rusting.

Here are pics of the destruction.

Nopers, I've seen that on every Evo I've seen.. even a new RS with only a few thousand miles. Bad design! Even my UIP there is a small rub on it where the other end of the snorkel bounced on. Touch up paint... I actually have an intake but left that piece on, partly because it covers that ugly spot, the other part is so that it still pushes some air that direction, it can't hurt.

ah good to know it's normal, since that's the case i'll just let it keep rubbing so the rust doesn't form on it. Then once i do upgrade to a intake i'll just get some touch up paint to it and throw a radiator shrould over it.

Thanks for the quick reply. If only mitsu took a few more mins to design some of these things.

Just so I know for future reference: is the part it is rubbing on called the radiator support?

10k+ on mine and not a mark...the really **** remove that and clean dirt out from underneath it when they wash the car. No marks following that regimen.

I would keep an eye out for it, when I changed my air filter with 10k on it there were no marks, but now it looks like that.

I got same crap. Carbon fiber radiator shroud = solution to cover it.

When you placed the carbon fiber radiator shroud did it create more scratches along the radiator support. I'm afraid if I use a radiator shroud it will cause a huge long scrape.

Dan: It's happened to all of the local's cars running the scoop since all the sane and dirt gets trappend under it and grinds the paint away. With my intake, I still run the scoop so the scratches arent visible at all.

The next time we both make it to a dinner meet together I'll show you.

(Initially, I thought this thread was a big joke..."pics of the destruction" )

This thread was half serious, and my choice of words always make it seem worst then it really is.

I had a feeling it was a common thing, I just never caught it happen on anyone elses car. I'll try to make it out to the next meet, i've been pretty busy recently.
