Third gear grinding...

I just got my evo a few days ago, its an '05 with 16k miles. I have noticed a slight grind into third gear under partial throttle and in low rpm's. It still has the factory warranty, so I am going to bring it in. But it has drop springs and a filter, so I dont know if they are going to try to void it b/c of that. If they do void my warranty, does anyone have any suggestions a different gear oil to prvent this? I did a little searching, but got mixed results. Thanks.

I got the same thing happening a little in 2nd too. I would replace the air filter when you bring it back just because. And as far as the springs, they wont void the warranty on your transmission because of that. But they will void the warranty on the suspension, or at least give you a very hard time about it if you ever bring it in for anything suspension related.

At that low mileage it means that you or someone was rough while shifting. To shift fast you dont need to slam it into the gear.

The mods to the suspension and the air filter shouldnt void the warranty. By law they cant void your warrany on your transmission because you have springs. They are in no way related. If they try do some search on here and you can find the link to the trial case where it was ruled that a dealership cant void your warranty on your transmission due to springs on your suspension. Also it might help to just call mitsu corporate 1st.

Well honestly they advertise this car as a sports car. Its supposed to be driven hard. There is a post on here about some guy that was gonna buy an Evo and drive the ever loving crap out of it and see if mitsu will cover broken parts. Do a search and see if you can find it. If nothing else just send it off to shep or tre and have them rebuild it.

mine just started doing this, usually when its really cold. but im gonna adjust the clutch a little remove the deal in the slave cylinder and call it a day. I got like 25k on the car and its so slight when it does happen that it doesnt even bother me. Im not gonna fight with mitsu cause the car does have a clutch in it, and honestly i dont want them workin on my car. When its time im just gonna spend the money and have shep or tre do it that way i dont have to worry about it

But to answer your question take the car in. like everyone is sayin they cant void your warrenty because of lowering springs and a filter neither one of those has anything to do with the transmission

I hear you man stuff like this is frustrating. Im not trying to be a ***** to the guy unfortuneately he is at the mercy of the district rep. In other words good luck. Even if the dealer wanted to replace it they have to get ok from the rep. The rep can say this car is lowerded and has been raced. You can claim the Moss-Magnussen Act all you want and fight it in court but it will cost you more than just having Shep or TRE rebuild it to their indestrutible specs.

Like I said...yes the car was meant to be driven hard, but that doesn't mean you have to abuse it. Punching the car into gear DOES NOTHING.....there is NO BENEFIT of doing this. You can shift just as quick by being smooth and light on the gear lever.

Synchros are a wear item like brake pads and tires. If the car has been abused they are not going to cover it. Just because you bought an abused car and are unhappy, it does not mean that you can just place the blame on Mitsu.....you'd be better off contacting the old owner and finding out if they knew about it....

If you bought the car used from the dealer that is a different story though....either way good luck

Well my car is bone stock so i might have a chance. As far as the other guy with springs and a filter, that may apply. I also have an extended warranty from Nissan, i heard they have great customer service.

Try changing the fluid to BG Synchro Shift. I would also replace the under hood shifter bushings and shifter base bushings. I had a slight grind at high rpm when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. These items fixed my problem.

I'd say being bone stock you have a better chance. Definately do the fluid first though

The trans can be somewhat rough and will be notchy at random rpms. Both of my evos have done this. Does it consistantly do this? Will it grind at higher rpms too? Do you have a cone filter or a drop in? Drop ins are fine with all the dealers I've heard of. Might as well try to take it in if it is bothering you that much.
