Side mirrors are not meant to replace the action of turning your head and looking behind you before changing lanes.

No matter how much adjusting of the rear mirrors you do, you will always have some blind spots to deal with.

Not in my case, I haven't turned my head in years using blind spot mirrors. Turning your head could be pretty dangerous some times actually, it has happened to me before. Ones you turned your head the car in front of you could slam on their brakes and then you're pretty much screwed.
Try those stick on 5" blind spot mirrors they sell in Pepboys or Autozone, they work great.

Yeah, but you're not supposed be driving that close where it would it make a difference

Bottom line is to be much more careful.... The ***** of it is, I did look, both to the mirror and even turnned my head I did not see him! The big problem is that these kinds of things happen always at the worst moments and when traffic is heavy and congested. Around here the traffic is extremely fast and if you don't watch out, you'll rear end somebody in a hurry, it's a very bad idea to turn your head away even for a moment.

I have my mirrors adjusted so that any car in either lane is not in my rear view mirror, it's in the side mirror. I never adjust my mirrors so I can see any part of my car in them from driving position. I guess I'd best just be super careful when changing lanes.... No need to get boxed in and have to change lanes at the last minute. That's what I did this morning and it caused me this hassle... Oh yeah, I really try to never get angry when somebody cuts me off either. I'd say 99.9% of the time they never knew they did it and the rest of the time it's some total psycho that surely will become violent if I give him the finger of blow the horn or whatever. I get cut off all the time but I just make my emergency maneuver with my fine handling car and go on my way... Life is too short to create more problems...

The Wall Street Journal said that in their review of the EVO. They were talking about how it's so easy to speed in it and they said that the steering wheel perfectly blocked the spedometer and the huge spoiler perfectly blocked the lights of cop cars.

Somebody should have told them that the steering wheel height is adjustable to allow view of speedometer. The blind spot caused by the spoiler can be adjusted to be higher or lower by manipulating the mirror stem position to change the reflection andle and adopting a modified gangsta lean driving position.

In order to compensate for the blind spots, I constantly perform 360 degree scans employing a combination of mirrors checks and head turns. This enables me to maintain my situational awareness. It has saved me countless times driving both motorcycles and cars. Additionally, it's a practiced security technique that becomes automatic and second nature over time. By eliminating the element of surprise, you significantly increase your chances of avoiding potential victimization or becoming party to an otherwise unpleasant experience. Just so happens that this same technique is an effective defensive driving tool.
Stay alert, stay alive.

There are always some blind spot. Get one of those little round "racing" mirror from any auto accessory store and put it on your side mirror, U solve the problem.

The most common blind spot is the left rear.

Also, the wing has a way to interfere with the rearview mirror... It looks like it blocks exactly the part where the police cars have their lights ....
Tell me about it,
Today I got pulled over by an unmarked police vehicle (Ford Explorer), and I didn't see his lights flashing at me (headlight height level) until he got really close to me.

The cop was like why didn't you pull over when I flash my lights on you? I immediately thought about my EVO wing blocking the rearview completely

i told him I didn't see him. I guess he pulled me over for crossing over a solid line on a bridge that has 4 lanes and all go the same direction
Anyway, at the end he didn't give me a tkt

Ever since learning to drive, I have ALWAYS installed small convex mirrors on both side mirrors. I did that within 15 minutes of buying my Evo as well. Once you're used to running with those, the car will feel like an extention of your body. Especially when driving in dead-locked rush hour traffic on the freeway. I whole-heartedly agree that looking over your shoulder is dangerous. Yes I know that's what's taught in drivers ed, but I would make a very large wager, if there were any way of proving it, that a large percentage of wrecks occur in that 1/2 second amount of time when completely taking your eyes off the road in front of you. The mirrors are only like $1.50 each. Very easy to get used to.

I totally know what you guys are talking about. As the owner of a '97 AWD Talon, I know what its like to have a large wing blocking everything. As I'm sure everyone knows, the '97 and up DSM turbos (and the silly Eclipse GS O.Z. Edition) had the tall wings in back. Now, its not as bad on the Eclipse, but on the Talon, the big boomerang style wing sits like 8 inches off the hatch. Thats not the big problem though. What is the problem with the Talon is that they put the center brake light right under the center of the rear wing, connecting the wing to the trunk. So, not only does the wing cut off the top of most cars (and the lights on cruisers ), but the brake light makes it so that some cars that are far enough behind you completely dissapear. I've driven a friends '99 GSX, and its like a whole new window out back without that thing back there. The Eclipse wing is just a tad taller too, so that helps as well. Coming from my car, I can only see the Evo's wing as a blessing being that tall compared to what I have now. You lucky bastards. Hopefully I will have my Evo soon, and will know what its like to have a functional rear window.

I think it's really important to turn your head on lane changes even if your not checking the blind spot. There's also the problem of someone else 2 lanes over changing into the same lane as you are. I usually have that type of problem pop out more often than cars hiding in my blind spot. I also usually cruise either faster or slower than traffic to keep people away from hidding in the blind spot.
