exhaust citation

i got a question for anyone who can answer it...

i got cited for having a "modified exhaust" a month ago and I recieved the letter in the mail about my court appearance. it says "bail of $253.50 or reduced bail of $170.00 with proof-of-correction may be sent by mail or on before etc. etc."

so does that mean that I can just pay the $253.50 without fixing my exhaust??? cuz I rather just shell out the $253 without going through all the hassle of putting my stock pipes back on and correcting it.

any response is appreciated.

I am no expert but I think that if you just pay the $253.50 and don't fix it then you will just end up with another citation once spotted again.

Damn, I am glad that I live in Florida where I don't have to worry about that.

Where do you live? That just sounds ridiculous! Does that SF stand for San Francisco or what?

Certainly sounds like the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia from the size of the fines.

yes I'm from San Francisco. I understand that there is a good chance of getting another citation once I get spotted again. But it's a pretty seldom occurance, although this is not my first time. The last time it happened I actually put all my stock pipes back on to get it corrected, and I still paid the reduced fine. This time I just want to pay the entire fine and get it over with... if that is possible.

You can pay the fine without putting the stocker one back on. Keep in mind that you will get fined again if spotted.

Is it just having any aftermarket exhaust that they stop you and cite you for? Or is it a noise regulation that they think your breaking? If it's a noise thing, just change the exhaust out for a GReddy or HKS Carbon Ti. If it's a looks thing, just find an exhaust with a stock looking muffler.

Yeah, that seems WAY too extreme. I just hate the fact that they pick on us with our cars because they are loud, yet you will see those same people go out on their Harleys with loud *** exhausts and think it's the greatest thing ever!!!

It was solely on the fact that I had an aftermarket exhaust period. I was shifting at 2500 rpms the whole way so it wouldn't be loud, plus the cop didn't mention anything at all about the noise. It was just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Believe me, EVERYONE has a modified exhaust around here.

I sent this to you in an email, but now my account is verified so I can post it here for everyone else. Sorry, this is going to be a long post. I'll highlight the important stuff.

The VC for exhausts in whole can be found here: http://www.vfaq.com/BADSM/CHP-Exhaust.html

Any updates can be found here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vc_index_e.htm
Search under Exhaust.

the basic highlights of the VC state that:

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

The list of exhaust systems that fall under 95dbA that I have personally tested at the state referee are: Works Exhale 76mm turbo back with HFC, AMS 76mm turbo back with HFC, and Thermal R&D 70mm catback (since i haven't seen one for the Evolution in 76mm, but on a 2g DSM a setup of an AMS 76mm DP, HFC, and 76mm Thermal R&D catback reached a level of 92dbA.) That does not exclude any exhaust systems that I have not tested, such as, Greddy, HKS, Megan Racing, etc due to the fact that as stated above, I have not personally had them tested at the state referee.

27150. (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.

Oh and as far as him pulling you over for just having a modified exhaust, he can't do that. The VC states that he MUST listen to the exhaust while at idle and while driving and deem that it is out of standards, and that the modified exhaust is not grounds for pulling someone over, because it is not illegal.
