If you can't afford an Evo, would settle for a 3000GT VR-4?

Well...sounds like you have your mind made up so you might as well get one.

You can get a 1g for +/- $5k which would be a great start for an awesome ride

I would get a DSM, but don't they require A LOT of work and aren't very reliable? I want a 1g GSX myslef =]

1g motors are pretty damn strong...its still a 4g63. Parts are A LOT cheaper than VR-4 parts...that I can promise you. They are also easier to work on.

Don't get me wrong, because I like the way the 3kGTs look, but while the initial investment may be less, once you start modding it, it will cost you just as much as a Supra

If you get one, find yourself a spare tranny to have shep build and then baby it till it's done. Tranny's on those are worse that WRX's...

thats because a supra is a far superior car all around

the only on in favor of the 3000gt in this thread seems to be you, sounds like you are trying to justify buying a tanks with quirky gizmos prone to fail

If you want it, buy it, but I can ay there are better ways to spend 10k

1st or 2nd gen DSM hands down before you buy a tank that has an impossible to work on engine bay. Everything you do requires the entire damn motor to be pulled.

Get a 1G or 2G or a plain WRX stay away from the over-hyped VR4's.

Take it from me I've owned 4 of them and love them! There great cars don't listen to the internet know it all's who think they know anything about VR-4's. I can't believe anyone here is saying the interiors are not as nice as the EVO... the interior of the VR-4 is awesome and one of the nicest/plushest of all the cars I've owned (after '96). You can't get anymore generic for the interior of the EVO...The room factor... its pretty big considering its a 2 door "sports" car. There really 2 different to compare apples to apples but they have great potential but like the RX7 have a horrible reputation given to them by people who A. never owned one, B. never even driven one or driven in one, C. heard of guy who's best friends, brothers, ex-girlfriends dad used to own one and he said it was the biggest piece that he had even owned... Now with everything comes the bad/tradeoffs, the car is a pig, end of story! 2 of my '96's weighed around 3,550 my '96 VR-4 Spyder weighed 4,100!!! you got to remember it was one of the first production fully retratable hard tops ever, before Benz and all the other big dogs and my '99 weighed 3,800 because it had some more bs then the pre '99 ie side airbags and a host of other weight adding BS. The tranny's are ok but you really want a 6 spd over the 5 for strength, the tranny's and transfer case are much beefier. I think there great looking cars especially the '99's with the redesigned front end and the new spoiler. If you get an older one you can always throw the '99 front end on it to give it the newer look, I was the first person ever to do the '99 conversion on my first '96. In the end you got to get what you like and don't let someone elses opinion persuade your own. I'll say it again there great cars and as soon as I find my unicorn I'll own another one...

Joe

^ Thanks man. That's what I like to hear. Cuz you've owned a few. 99's are hard to find. Hahahah! My dad used to sell them as a Mitsubishi salesperson and I fell in love with it when I was like 6....but I don't get me wrong, I still want an Evo. In fact, I want both!

I suggested the 1g bscause they are easier to find, fairly cheap still, and the engine is stronger than the 2g. My brother has a 90 Talon, running a big 16g, full TBE Apexi exhaust, FMIC, Injen intake, 2g MAF, Apexi EVCR/SAFC at 22 psi running STRONG at 245k on the clock.

I guess if you can't afford an Evo and you like the VR-4, then go ahead and go with the VR-4.

I had a 3000GT vr4 when I was younger.
They're nice cars...but they are extremly heavy cars.

It seems like they have pretty decent potential although I would
choose nice low mileage supra anyday but you're also talking alot of money.

sorry to hijack, but i just picked up this 1g https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=231582 it's a real nice 15 year old car but it is no evo. the tranny is really my only problem. it is not as smooth as the evo. (my evo also has 100 more hp and 130 more tq which helps make it alot more fun) it's funny though because in the evo no one really tries to race me on the street. but in the "taser" kids in civics, rsx's, spec v's always try to race me. i don't condone street racing but it is kind of satifying to give it a little gas and have my 15 year old mitsubishi destroy those cars off the line. all my buddies gave me **** for buying a 1g but overall it is a great car and i don't regret buying it for one minute. get what you want and enjoy. thanks.

Having owned a 95' VR-4, I'd have to say it was one of the most fun cars to drive I have ever had.

It was heavier than a chick at McDonalds, but with so much power on tap you forget that pretty easily. I didn't have any problems with it engine-wise, just make sure the tranny is in good condition. It's a great car for the money, if you like it, go for it!
