If you can't afford an Evo, would settle for a 3000GT VR-4?

some 3000GT VR4/Stealth R/T TT owners gave their opinions. Can you at least provide us some significant and relevant info like we did?We presented the good and the bad of the VR4. If you claim not to go with the VR4 at least back up your statements(feedback please)

The 3000GT VR4 has potential to be a really fast car, but like everyone else said, it is very heavy. Besides that, it can made to be VERY fast, but parts are scarce and expensive. Modifying the V6 can be labor intensive, and is way harder than working on a I-4. The VR4's are also plagued with a number of known mechanical/electrical issues that steer many people away. After all is said and done, you might be paying for more than you bargained for. In my opinion, the exterior of the VR4 looks 100 times better than the Evo, which looks like a bloated hedgehog on steriods (3000Gt is lower to the ground and seems more aerodynamic).

haha 3000gt was my first mitsubishi love when the evo wasnt in america. i heard alot about the car being heavy but it never really bothered me too much. now im driving an audi s4 thats almost 5 thousand pounds thats atleast tt so i guess weight doesnt bother me too much or that could also be why i want an evo instead of it lol
I test drove a few before I got the Evo, its not four door and a lot of the old GT are quite beat up with high mileage unless your lucky to find a clean one. But old mitsubishi are quite beaten up. Good luck.
Yeah it seems pretty clear to me, that the ones saying not to go for a VR4 have never owned one before and really have no knowledge of what they are talking about. I owned two of them and one was a bad apple, but the second one was pure joy to drive. I absolutely loved that car (not as much as my EVO though). People keep saying how heavy it is, but honestly you don't really feel the weight, unless you really push it to the limit. I enjoyed the interior of the car, although I admit I had the interior of my VR4 re-done. The rear seats are very small, but if your best friends are all small filipino girls that weigh no more than 115 pounds, than the back seat is fine and they can fit. But bigger people are gonna probably have to sit sideways back there. Also the AWD was awesome and the active areo system (when it is working) is a pretty cool system. The car was pretty quick for the limited amount of bolt ons I had- Turboback Exhaust, Manual Boost Controller@16-17PSI, and Intake, with just those amount of mods the car held it's own on the streets and had very little lag compared to my current EVO. I mean it's a really nice car to own for the money, a Supra may be a better choice, but if you can afford a Supra Twin Turbo than you can afford an EVO. You can get a 1996-1998 3000GT VR4 for under $18,000. A great car, but there are some negatives too.
Here are some pics of my old VR4, sorry for the sh*tty picture quality. I had a custom Viper Blue Paint Job and I know the car needed to be lowered, was going to be my next mod, but the accident happend

Performance wise, the vr4 BPUed can be put at ~300whp easily. It's the weight that kills it. Combine that with the weak Getrag 6 speed transmissions syncros and leak-proned transfercases, you have a world of trouble.
The styling of the 3000GT is timeless. Even now with a nice paintjob and well kept interior, the 3000GT keeps its sexiness.
In regards to the original poster, if you can't afford an EVO, do NOT settle for a 3000GT VR4 because to get one in decent condition, you're looking at ~17-20K. EVO 8s with ~30K miles are going for 20-22K right now, modded even.
Attached is a picture of my 97 Caracas Red 3000GT VR4. Beautiful car....and that's about it

You will have to get really creative if you decide to build the VR4. You can make 'em nice but the engine bay is very cramped and the car needs a serious diet.
It's called a Mitsubishi GTO over here and I attached a pic of the 800whp+ T88H-38GK equipped monster that I saw at the '04 ***uoka Auto Salon.
