As long as you do not have a check engine light with obd2 you should be fine. I just passed in texas with no cat and I was praying that my random p0300 code wouldnt pop up at time of inspection.

I wish it was as easy as giving the guy a 20 but they have cameras on all the tech stations and make you wait in a booth once you get out of the car.
If you want to dive into the HELL that is the manual go for it. I'm not going to read it myself as i can simply just watch the man as they test the car. http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/levprog/test_proc.htm

The proceedure here:
- Visual inspection of part
+Cat
+Intake (proper house routing, heated intake if applicable/etc...)
+Fuel cap (even bloody tested to make sure it seals.. wtf?)
+Oil cap
+Proper Filters

-Testing
+15mph dyno test for pollutants
+25mph dyno test for pollutants
+Engine idle speed
+ODBI/ODBII scan for trouble codes
+Timing for non ODBII eletronic cars (yes he bust out a timing light)

The computer scans in a VIN number and tells the guy the test procedure. I'm sure i'm skipping something and i'm not even sure if they can dyno test the AWD systems here maybe that will be a lucky break for us...

CA doesn't have dyno tests that can do AWD systems so they test AWD cars at idle. However, you have to think of more colorful ways to get around the visual inspection. Therein lies a whole can of worms, but you'd be surprised what you can get to pass in CA if you have a little ingenuity

ATL rules! I went in without a cat and the tech didn't even know where to plug in his stupid reader! He couldn't find the Evo on any of his files so he looked at the car and said you're good to go! Oh, I had to pay $25.

i think in NJ as long as you dont throw any CEL and you pass a visual test which includes tire wear, looking for a cat( which they dont bother to do with a newer car), smoke test, and signals. You can pass with a catless TBE with anti fouler or 02 fix no problem in NJ and it has been done many times.
