Left hand at 10 with my elbow out the window, or left hand firmly on 10 with right hand on shifter.

I've heard from at least two people that putting your hand on the shifter for a long time causes extra wear on the shifter or linkage. Can anyone explain if this is true or not??

I've heard that too, guess it depends how much pressure you put on the shifter. My shifter is so far forward that when and if I rest my hand on it, its usually just a few fingers because that is all I can comfortably reach. I'd imagine that if you have a decent shifter that is stiff enough, it won't move to the point that it'll **** stuff up just resting your hand on it.

Syncrho wear is what I've been told...you are pushing on them harder.

Definitely 9 and 3.
Although it feels more natural to place them at 10 and 2, 9 and 3 is the proper placement.
Check the steering wheel design.

i hold mine at about 9:30 and 2:30...with the bottom of my pinkies against the top of the spokes....that feels the best to me...it may be closer to 9:15 and 2:45.... ...then again it may be the 10 and 2 that everyone is talking about...i tried the 9 and 3 but that felt really awkward.....maybe if the steering wheel was smaller that would be ok for me but it felt like i had less control of the wheel.....also i probably sit closer to the wheel than most since my legs are short....lol...maybe this is the reason i like 10 and 2

I usually ride around with a monkey in my lap who does most of the steering

I place my hands at 9 and 3 with my thumbs over the spokes. This way I can go from lock to opposite lock without moving my hands on the wheel.

FYI, the manual states that resting your hand on the shifter will wear out the linkages.

as long as the pressure from your hand is directed toward the shifter pivot point - the bushing (directly down), it's not going to hurt anything. however, if ur hand is applying pressure to it in the forward, backward, or sideways manner, you will be putting more pressure on the shiftforks. it's kinda hard to be sure that the pressure is directly down, so the best thing to do is not to have your whole hand on it, or maybe just the tips of your fingers.
