Fun Evo Math Brain Teaser!!!

This is a variation of a brain teaser I was asked today at work:

Warrtalon hops in his Evo to head out on a road trip to David Buschur's shop for a retune. He gets halfway there and realizes his ECU is in Valet mode and he's only been averaging 40mph. He looks at his watch and says, "Damn, I wanted to do at least 80mph for the whole trip." He turns off Valet mode and heads out...

After having gone halfway at 40mph, how fast must Warrt drive in order to average 80mph for his whole trip to the shop?

Hint: It's not the obvious!

Well not accounting for traffic, weather, road condition, police and rest stops...need to know total distance.

Is he wearing pants on the trip?

You said it wasn't that obvious.

If he was driving forty miles in one hour and he was halfway to his destination before realizing that he was in valet mode, then the total distance would be eighty miles total.

Cant be done, cause he has ALREADY gone 1/2 way, so he cant do 80 the whole way if he has already travelled half of it...?

very f...in fast. speed of light.

cause goin 40mph. if he is exactly at 1/2 way. .... if he was goin 80 he would have been there already. he would be too late to go anyfaster.

if i understood the question right then my answer is correct.

For the sake of this problem, discount all outside forces and just go with the basics of what's given.

Also, distance doesn't matter, all you need to know is he averaged 40mph the first half, and has halfway to go.

(40 + x) / 2 = 80

40 + x = 160

x = 120

120 mph for the second half of the trip

MyEvoDream and bomjoon are correct!

Since distance doesn't matter, just keep the ratio and plug in some numbers... assume the trip is 80 miles... if he's gone 40 miles (or X miles) at 40mph, he's driven for 1 hour. If his goal is to average 80mph over 80 miles (or 2X miles), then he only has 1 hour to do it. So... even if Warrt is WOT the rest of the way, he will average LESS than 80mph for the whole trip.

It doesn't say he was driving for one hour.

My guess to the answer is 160.
