Chilton/Hayns Manual

Did anyone notice how neither of these leading car manual publishers have a version for any Evolution? I know it's a car for the enthusiasts only, but it wouldn't hurt to have a manual around for quick reference. Am I missing something? Is there a manual from anyone out there?

I also think they concentrate more on domestics that break down more often...

You can order a set of manuals from the dealer. If you happen to actually GET them though, please post haha. I ordered my in August weeks before I picked up my car and only the electrical manual (one of the three books) arrived. Still waiting on the rest.

my experience over 20 years is chiltons type manuals are not worth the $- even though they're considerably cheaper than the factory manuals. There's a reason they're cheaper- they are no where near as complete as the factory manuals. If you want help on basics like changing spark plugs and oil they'd be fine if available.

Spend the extra $, even if Chiltons is available, and get the manuals from the dealer.

i love the haynes/chilton compared to the factory manual. and yes the factory manual is 2 books about 3" thick so it'd be a big one! i ordered mine from here and it's the same as the one at the dealer. got it in about a week.

I checked that website and they don't seem to have one for the IX. but they do have something called '2006 Lancer EVO Service Manual CD'. Anyone know what's in this cd? Hell if it's an interactive service/mechanical manual, that would be better than any book. One could basically run it on a laptop in the garage. I'll try to get a hold of these guys and find out but if anyone else here knows, please let me in on the info. Ultimately, if I do get this cd, I can't just share it here for free *winkwink*........

actually, i have one of those too and it's the exact same as the service manual i paid $140 for, but was only $5 on ebay and it's on a disk instead of paper. so those work just as well if you have a laptop, or just print out what you need then go to work.

I love my chiltons manual. It's great for cushioning the oil pan, tranny, etc. when using a jack to raise them.

This is just not true..

I have tons of chilton/Hanes manuals for older japanese and domestic cars, its just that they create the manuals by one of the authors working on the cars, and its probably not a car they have even heard of, let alone worked on.

I happen to agree with another post saying that its probably too complex a car for many to work on. Its not COMPLICATED to do minor modifications, but many of the diagnostics and whatnot can be a bit difficult if not impossible without the proper diagnostic tools. Heck, even the timing belts are a PITA to do for a first-timer.

I start seeing these manuals come out for cars that no longer get much support or service at a dealership any longer. Or cars that are frequently owned by people who need to repair their own car and don't have access to the other resources they need.

Also, the chiltons manuals are just plain incomplete, alot of assembly/disassembly stuff is covered, but their troubleshooting and other documentation (such as proper technique for disengaging parts without damaging them) is pretty poor.

Factory service manuals for ANY car you own are essential for the do it yourselfers, even if its "over your head" you are better off with too much information, than not enough.. Plus there are some jobs that really need the right tool no matter what, (Timing belt tensioner tool is a perfect example as breaking a cheap home-made tool can result in a HUGE amount of additional work and potential damage. I consider myself fairly competant, and had a home-made tool break on me, it was the one and only time I didn't purchase the right tool for a job, I have since bought the tool)
