Food for thought--WRXesque Evo?
WRX is pretty much a detuned STi--you get smaller turbo (but with same engine? can someone chime in on this) , AWD, less competent tranny, etc for cheaper price. Obviously, lancer is nothing like Evo with its different engine and lack of AWD/Turbo. If Mitsubishi were to pull off what Subaru did and offer lower grade Evo (much like WRX), do you think it'd finally alleviate Mitsu's chronic financial ailments?
Discuss
EDIT: Keep in mind--if mitsu were to offer lower grade evo (same body style minus the big wing) much like WRX, they can save $ at the factory since evo/lesser evo can share body parts. Not only that, but if the lower evo shared same engine (but with less competent turbo), they can save more $ from factory since they can mass produce evo engine and use it on other cars. Same theory to the AWD drivetrain (lower cost due to higher production), interior parts (dash gauge, stereo, seats, etc), etc--basically, really having an evo with less potent performance parts to save $ at the factory.
Also, they COULD offer better looking/color matching rims (think how WRX/STi are offered with gold rims, which look better than plain color rims with certain colors)...

Unfortunately, Mitsu can't sell enough EVOs or detuned EVOs to fix their issues. However, the Outlander is a very nice vehicle that competes well with the others in its class and they can actually sell a bunch of Outlanders. If they can get the Galant right and the new larger SUV right, they'll be on their way.
Nissan and Subaru showed that the solution for an ailing car company is to make cars that people actually want to buy. Mitsu could follow the Subaru lead and put the new turbo 4 in sportier versions of their car line up. At Subaru, you can now get a 2.5 liter turbo in everything subaru sells, but the Tribeca. I can tell you the Subaru Legacy and Outbacks never much interested me until they put the turbo 2.5 in them. Now, I would actually consider both of them.

Exactly--I think we can all agree that Evo is a very popular car, so why not try to offer lower grade evo (making it more affordable) like how Subaru does with WRX? Also, my idea is that if those cars were to share parts, Mitsu should be able to cut cost at the factory and thus make the Evo even MORE appealing with money saved?
I've heard that with the redesigned Lancer,
is going to do something like the Subaru Impreza -> WRX -> STI line-up with the Lancer -> Ralliart -> Evo. In other words, the new RA is supposed to be less like a base Lancer and more like an Evo.

Isn't the the RS comparable to the wrx and SE an/or MR to the STi ? I don't know how much more you can strip down an evo, maybe just add the 4g63 to the base lancer and awd, It would look like $#!& either way it's not happening
The 4G63 is history in the new Lancer line.
yeah but you could def strip the evo
because ever since 1990 the eclipse has been making 195hp
that seems like a good engine /turbo /transmission set up
to sell to people for cheaper then the evo
but ALSO i hate seeing wrxs with sti parts on them
so id hate seeing lancers trying to look like evos
i think the way its done right now is fine
id honestly like there to be no such thing as a lancer
and only an evo
why coudlnt they call the lancer the mirage or something
its embarassing to have the same name as that car

mitsu should just bring back the gst. im sure they could find a way to make it relatively inexpesive, at least in comparison with the evos price. then again maybe not..cars are getting to be so damn expensive. a new eclipse with turbo added in would prob send it up into evo price range, even with just fwd.
Just to clarify, it isn't the same 2.5l that is in the sti.
There are MANY differences between the wrx and sti. The whole drivetrain is different. the chassis is stiffened on the sti, aluminum suspension bits on the sti. Just way too many differences to name them all.
