question about 4/5/6 point harnesses (legality)

basically my question is if these are for street use? Im getting a great deal on a harness bar someone out here in san diego custom fabricates for 120.00 and i want to get some harnesses (i take the car for rally runs almost every monday).

Are harnesses legal in california for use while driving?

No, they are not. Plus, they are only to be used with a helmet. You don't use harnesses on the street man. The harnss bar is also not needed, so it's not really a great deal. It does nothing for safety, and you can connect the harnesses to the rear LATCH system.

You really do rally races/runs every week? If you get the harnesses, you'll just have to switch out the harness when daily driving.

I would not ever want a harness unless I also had a full roll cage. If you flip your car and your roof caves in with a five point harness, your head will be crushed. If you are really racing once a week, you should have a cage already.

I'm not sure of the legality of harnesses.

Warr isn't completely right about the legality of harnesses .. some are DOT approved, such as the Schroth Auto Controls. However, if you find yourself in a rollover situation, you will be in more danger than with the stock belts due to the way the harnesses restrict movement.

Basically, if you get harnesses, get a cage or roll bar first.

and I think the harness bar is a great idea. It lets you run harnesses mounted in the correct location while maintaining the functionality of the rear seats.

That's contradictory, because if you have a harness bar, then you have no cage, and you just got done saying you shouldn't have a harness without a cage or roll bar.

I guess you have a point ... I was thinking there might be half cages or roll bars without a crossbar behind the seats. I really haven't looked into it.

To be cool mainly, but also to hold the harness at a higher level rather than making a steep angle that could compress your spine.

/\ which is the same thing the cross bar of a cage would do, which is what Warr and I were discussing.

You want to mount your harnesses perpendicular to your seating position. The lower the mounting point is, the more likely you are to become paralyzed.

I'll bump this up because I think more people should be aware of the danger.

I had a CRX previous to my evo and before I ever drove it, my dad had an Autopower rollbar put in the car. The bar was not padded and aside from a side impact, would have likey hurt me more than helped me in an accident.

After I got my evo, my dad read about the ****ty side impact rating and offerd to pay to put a roll cage in my car. Mind you this is only for daily driving. I really wanted to do it however I had previously read about the dangers without a helmet, only for track, etc etc. I also explained that it would be even more dangerous if not impossible to have rear passengers.

Long story short, I'm sticking with stock belts and no roll cage.

In an rollover wouldn't the stock seatbelt crush your head to? Idk I've always thought that having a harness will protect you more then the stock seatbelt.

bump need answer
