The sudden power steering leak...

Here's my situation. I made an appointment with Key Mitsubishi in Milford CT to bring my car in on Saturday for an oil change/tire rotation. They said sure, bring it in anytime. What they neglected to mention was that they were closed after 12pm.

Aggravated, and wanting to make sure I wouldn't have to wait a week (see, normal people work Mon-Fri) I decided to bring my car over to Firestone here in my own town for the oil change/tire rotation. The job cost ten bucks less and saved me a lot of hassle, until I got a call from the young guy working on my car. He said I was leaking power steering fluid, and that I should bring it into Mitsubishi immediately. I was dumbfounded, as I could never remember seeing any leaks whatsoever in my garage, plus I had been driving for over five thousand miles without any service or check ups, so why now?

He filled it back up, and that night I verified it was up to MAX on the stick. Today I wake up, see a good sized puddle in my garage, and notice my steering fluid is now down to half of what it was just last night.

If I had this leak, you'd think I would have noticed it by now. How do I suddenly lose half the fluid in just one night?

So, to those that know more than I, how does this situation sound? Could this kid at Firestone have broken something and not told me? Or could this leak have just started happening very recently?

Either way I'm bringing it in to Mitsubishi, but it burns me that I'll have to miss work to do it.

Well i can tell you this. Your first mistake is to bring your car to Firestone or dealership for service . Things as simple as oil change they'll ****ed up 50% of the time. From looking at the service dept @ Key Mitsubishi, i would stay away. The sales dept looks clueless too. Did you examine the oil puddle? You sure it's not motor oil? Why don't you get one of those rhino ramp and check under the car yourself. Make sure they didn't put in the wrong oil filter and check the drain plug. I got a feeling they unscrewed the wrong drain plug.

While I appreciate the advice, I have to say I was expecting the typical "never bring it to so and so" comments.

Let's face it, you're going to get idiots wherever you go. For the past eight years I've had no problems with Firestone, so I had no reason to suspect there'd be one now.

Having said that, I agree that it was probably a mistake on their part. The power steering fluid looks to still be there (after moving the car I noticed it was back to MAX, and I noticed similar posts regarding that on this board), but something leaked last night. As of now I don't see anything, and have noticed no problems. Plus, if it had been leaking so severely I find it difficult to believe I wouldn't have noticed for 5k+ miles.

Nonetheless I'm going to try bringing it to Mitsubishi for a once over so I can get a definitive answer. While I'd love to stay home tomorrow and play with my car, I have work and it just can't happen.

Thanks again for the help, and hopefully this will all be cleared up. I'm going to check under the car now and see if anything's happening.

well if it just started leaking there, which it had to becuase if you were driving around nad there was a sizable puddle in your garage just from an overnight gig, they probably did it.

find out where the leak is... maybe they tried to lift your car from a front subframe and broke a line.
