Effect of Coilover on Laptime - Video (UPDATED with BRAKES)

[UPDATE]
Since the last video below, i've had the following added to my car:

A set of AP Racing 6 POT brakes with 550 deg (Stock Pads from AP)
A reflash up to 315HP/418NM from 301HP/381NM torque.

The tires are a little used, they've had about 20 hot laps since the previous best lap of 2m 38.785s.

You'll notice the exit speeds at Turn 2 and T14 have dropped significantly, but i still hit higher speeds on the straights after those turns indicating higher torque/power and later braking has helped.

I did run into some traffic at T6 which i suspect cost me at least 0.5s and lost me some 10kph thru that corner.

Here's the side by side video of 2m 38.785s and 2m 37.912s

Hi All,
I recently got a set of Tein Super Racing coilovers and a pair of F/R APP Struts. Also
changed tires from the stock Yoko A046 to Yoko AD07 (new).

Those are my only changes since my last trackday. I shot some new videos of my laptime
after adding these modifications. I must say that i'm really very impressed with the
benefits of just these handling modifications. I could corner much more aggressively and the
car handled really well. little brake dive, little body roll. The tires were pretty good too
except abit screechy.

Here's a link to the video if anyone's interested ... for one of the videos, i managed to
capture my HUD speeds through the turns so you can see what speed i was actually doing. I
also superimposed a laptime counter.

I gained an amazing 5secs just on the shocks.

These videos were shot at the Malaysian F1 Circuit, Sepang Intnl Circuit.

here they are:

Great vids and cheers to you for a before and after! Lots of people do not ever try out specific mods right after they get them.

Though I would question how many times you've actually been on the track and whether or not your driving skills improved that time; since 5 secs is a LOT from my experience. Glad you like them!!

Awesome video. Clearly shows you how much you can benefit from a proper suspension in these cars. The video speaks for itself.

That is unless you were babying it on us during round 1.

thnx!!

noahrexion: good point on driving skill. Well, i'd been to this track 4 times prior to this trackday and i had stagnated at 2m 43s - 2m 44s.

i guess it had both the placebo effect as well as the mecahnical effect of improved handling ....

i must admit that i myself was not expecting 5 secs from just handling mods .... my next upgrade after settling into these coilovers will be some 6/4 brakes .. the stock brembos are just done IMHO ... stopping at T1 from 210kmh over and over again (2 hot laps - MAX) is just to tough for them ...

cheers all!

why all the credit to the coilovers and none to the new tires?

how much driving experience do you have & why was there always a dude sitting in your passenger seat?

What do you mean by done? Caliper seals are easily replaceable.
By 6/4 upgrade do you mean a 6 pot caliper front, 4 pot rear? You planning on upgrading the discs? Are you going to go bigger?

If you have not done so already, I suggest trying a different pad compound. A pad makes more of a difference than changing the calipers. I would also highly recommend some proper brake ducts. I'm sure you already do, but just in case, make sure to use better brake fluid too. Try these cheaper upgrades first...as you may be disappointed with more caliper pistons and no upgrades to pads and cooling.

Thats outstanding then! I mean good tires, driving skill and suspension are the top 3 most important things at a track IMO. If you were pretty stagnant at those times then it seems you probably had your driving style down pretty good. ts amazing to me that tires/coils on an EVO with great factory tires and good factory suspension would gain 5 secs!

Congrats nontheless, thanks for sharing and not taking my commentary as criticism

Hi Nils,
at our trackday you can bring along a passenger during your laps .... i had a couple of friends with me and they wanted to be in for the ride ... i guess w/o passenger i might've been able to go a little faster ...

the tires probably played a part too .... however, i did set 2m 43s on the stock
A046s as well when they were pretty new and i thought that AD07s are a good replacement for those hence i thought tires played less of a factor than the coilovers .. i could be wrong though ....

as for brakes, when i say done, i mean that i think they dont' give me the stopping power that i'm looking for. i have tried several different compounds, the 800deg Delphi lockheeds, 550deg APP pads ... i like the delphis better. The 2m38s were set with the 550deg APPs ....

once i do my brakes i'll post a before after video .. i'm pretty sure i wont' gain as much time as coilovers ... there are 3 hard braking corners which i hope to take 0.2 - 0.3s off with better stopping ... so at most another 1sec off the time i guess ...

will keep you posted. ... cheers!
