How good are Yoko Advans?
I'd second the nomination on the Toyo T1-S, though I don't drive an Evo (yet). My car came with Michelin Pilot Sports, which gripped well but squealed at the slightest provocation, and lasted 10K miles. After reading a review in one of the European car mags (CAR or EVO, forget which), I switched to the Toyos, and found:
- equivalent grip (they do take longer to warm up than the Michelins, but are at least as grippy once they do)
- less squeal
- longer tire life (they now need replacing at 15K miles)
- 25% lower cost.
Both sets of tires saw modest track use, and I was getting slightly better lap times with the Toyos (I was also getting more skilled with the car, so my interpretation was that the Michelins & Toyos were roughly equivalent from a performance perspective).

well, i'm taking a gamble and going with the S03's... i've had nothing but good experiences with them the last 2 times i've had them...
i don't drive the EVO to 100% capacity anyhow, so i'm not expecting any surprises...

Stay away from the S-03; it just does not work well on the Evo. This is sad since the S02 were one of the preferred tires on older Evos. Stay away from the Michelins.
Ralliart/Xtreme recommends Yokohama AVS sports. The ES100 are a reduced noise version I would not recommend them.
Goodyear F1-DS3 have been reported to work well. May not have the same grip as other tires here.
Toyo T1-S work well but can be over heated and get greasy, lose grip over time.
Claudius and others like the Pzero assemtrico (yellow label). Don't know if this is the same as the US Pzero asymmetrical.
I will try Falken azenis sports. They wont live forever but they their cheap. I would like to try one of the BFG performance tires and some of the Kumho autocross tires.
The tires that seem to work well all have stiff sidewalls, that is the only pattern I have seen.

GReat Treadlife decent grip Incredibly Inexpensive
If you want a great tire for the dollar get Yokohama AVS ES100s THey are incredibly inexpensive, have great treadlife, and the grip is surprising for the cost and treadlife.
You can't go wrong with these when commuting on them.

TIRES!!!
One of my favorite subjects!
First of all, I'd like to say that the 4 tires on your car are the only thing that links the car directly to the ground. For this reason, it is very important to have good tires! On any car, but especially on the Evo since you are often going much faster than you think you are. And although the brakes are very good for stock brakes, they can only transmit the braking force to the ground if the tires provide enough grip. Better tires will make the car brake, corner and even accelerate better. Make sure you get the best tires for your application (road, wet road, track, etc.)
I have tried the following:
PZero assimmetrico (yellow label) - good dry road tire
Yokohama A046 - good road tire, little bit better, but melts quickly as stated previously in this thread and wears rapidly
Yokohama AVS - crap: no grip, extreme wear
Yokohama A032R (compound H): awesome!
excellent grip, amazing braking, close to impossible to lock up without ABS, lasts 3000 fast road miles
I have heard the following over and over again:
Toyo T1S and Goodyear Eagle F1: great on wet road surfaces, average in the dry
Bridgestone S-03s: EVERY SINGLE PERSON who's tried them said they suck
Michelins last pretty well, but are average to good
Falken / BF Goodrich etc are crap. I have BF Goodrichs on my Subaru Impreza GT (1997) and they are the worst tires I have ever seen. My friends actually laugh at me with those on the car
