you guys need to use a usb not serial. i dont know of any one that has a serial on a laptop any more.

 

USB spec has small signal levels. This is why your USB printer cable is only 6 ft length. USB was designed for office use. Unfortunately most laptops are designed for office use not for tuning cars and are not equipped with serial ports. You can still buy new laptops with a serial port, but the selection is limited. When shopping for a new laptop keep in mind your application.
