I thing I just found some bad news :(

I was working on my 8, pulling the head, and went to remove the front right wheel. Well the car was already in the air so I put it in to gear to I could break the lug nut loose, the wheel spun. Next I put the car in a higher gear and pull the E-break as tight as I could. Tried to break the lugs loose again, wheel spun and it didnt even feel like it had any resistance. So with the E-break still up, I went to the other side of the car and was able to spin that wheel with my hand with ease. Crap, I think that my transfer case has crapped out, not cool. My engine rebuild just got much more expensive now that I have to fix the transmission and/or the transfer case.

Are the other wheels spinning when you spin one?

E-Brakes don't work with AWD in motion. You might be fine. I tried to use it while autoxing once, and someone told me it is "disabled" while in motion. Don't sweat it.

if you are talking about hte front wheels only even in gear they will spin...you are just bugging yourself out for no reason

alwas break the lugs loose when the car is on the ground...it's better that way regardless of the wheel spinning in the air or not

No no, the car is in the air and when spinning the front right wheel, both front wheels spin with extreme ease, the rear's are rock solid.

thats because they have the ebrake... the ebrake only locks up the rear wheels... not the fronts..

I havent pulled it yet, I have only pulled the turbo and exhaust manifold when I fould out this. Now I'm tired and hungry. I think I will just go get some chicken and let another tech look at it on monday. Hopefully it is nothing and wont cost anything to fix

If it is in gear, should all four not spin? or if the front can still spin, shouldnt there be some resistance to spining?

If you turn the front wheel in one direction, does the other wheel spin in the opposite direction? It should.

I had a whine, but it was only when the clutch was released (in gear and out). I chaulked that up to an OEM clutch with 46k on it, or a bad input bearing.

that is completly normal, ill bet if you spin the driver side one direction the passenger side will spin the other direction
if you welded the center diff then ya the front would not move
